Charles Speak Butchers Padiham
Excellent butchers shop. Top quality.
Really knows his cuts and proper butchery. He boned me a shoulder of lamb at the weekend and it was a fantastic joint.
It's a bit hot now so maybe stick to the BBQ meats but when the Autumn comes round get yourselves up there and treat yourself to a quality cut of meat for the family roast.

Take Rowls word for it that the lamb is top notch although I doubt the beef is.
If the beef is from the UK or Ireland it will only be fit for stewing

We have very good butchers in the area.
I cringe when people brag about getting a years worth of meat from Best of Bury for 30 quid.

Most local butchers have very good meat and individual specialisms. Always try to support them.

Speaking from experience mate and will stick by it after eating beef from Argentina and Brazil.
UK and Irish beef is shote and to be honest after living in Spain a couple of year, chicken and Pork doesn't come
up to scratch either
We don't have enough grazing land to breed good cattle for the best beef and we feed our cattle and poultry on shote to get quality

You get what you pay for.
South America cattle fed on cattle feed are not a patch on the pasture-fed cattle of Britain. However, you'll struggle to find a pasture fed piece of meat in a supermarket.
Next time you fly on your hols take a look out of the window on take off and touch down. Unless you're going to Ireland you won't find a greener patch of land on earth. Britain and Ireland have the best cattle on earth and also the best milk on earth.

Re: Charles Speak Butchers Padiham
We probably should use the butchers more often, because you forget how good the quality actually is.
For supermarket meat, M&S is usually very good and comparable to a butchers.

Re: Charles Speak Butchers Padiham
We've been travelling to the Charante-Maritime region for a number of years now. E.Le-Clerc's is the supermarket in the town and they get a tax-break of some sort for buying a certain percentage of fresh produce from local producers, I understand.Cardclaret wrote: ↑Thu Aug 11, 2022 4:24 pmUsed to go Normandy a few years ago on hols, I haven't eaten better dairy or poultry or home grown veg from local markets.
The tomatoes were tremendous as was the choice of salad crops, but the downside was that prices for some produce were far higher than the UK. A cucumber was £1.50 and 4 red onions were about £2.50 !

Trouble is ordinary working class folk can't afford to use the independent butcher they charge a fortune and it's no better than the supermarket, the same applies to the green grocer

It's either cheaper in the butcher or same price. And the quality is far superior.

A good butcher will sort you out with something if you tell them your budget. You dont get that bespoke service at tescos with pre-packed meat

Re: Charles Speak Butchers Padiham
Sorry TopClaret, I should have spent a bit longer on that post and said the following....
That's not completely true.
If you want good quality meat that's been reared properly then it's either cheaper in the butcher or same price. And the quality is far superior.
Supermarkets do have cheaper imported meat of much lower quality available. I suppose this is better for people on benefits and living on very low incomes and I don't begrudge anybody eating cheap meat.
But if you compare a butcher to a supermarket premium range the butcher I've found the butcher is usually better for price AND quality.

It's not even worth debating, Rowls. You'd have to have the taste buds of a sewer rat to say that most supermarket meat is no different from a good quality local butcher who knows their stuff.

Re: Charles Speak Butchers Padiham
Just discussing butchering with the wife and we are both of the same opinion, that British meat and poultry is rarely fit for consumption and I certainly wouldn't visit a UK restaurant and pay the extortionate prices for a piece of manky meat. Lived in Spain for a couple of years and there Pork and Chicken is far superior to the UK and the prices cheaper.
As for Beef we know longer longer eat the UK stuff after being spoilt by the steak we have been served over the last 2 years in the Canary Islands that is imported from South America and is far superior in quality.

I think it’s Chris Speak now, a good guy and son of Allan. Allan was good friends with my dad - a comedy duo to match even the best- always been good butchers and great to see them still going strong.
