Central Heating
Yours on yet?
Re: Central Heating
Had it on a few times, just for a bit in the evenings.
I’m going to be sensible with it but I’m certainly not going to sit in the cold.

We’ve had it on a couple of times but only for a short time, it’s bloody hard work when the Mrs wants it on and I don’t.
Re: Central Heating
ProX Heaters save on energy and in reviews are excellent value and heat up a room in a short time. I have ordered a couple so will find out shortly. Otherwise to save on energy bills turn off radiators in rooms not being used.

"Put on another jumper!" I keep telling the Dragon but to no avail.
Seriously I feel that we should do our bit to thwart "Vlad the bad" by keeping our energy usage to the minimum to prevent shortages.

Stayingup. I’ve just read up on them, they do indeed appear to have good reviews. What size have you gone for and do you have any idea what they’ll cost to run. We’ve a large open plan room so I’m not sure whether they’d do the job for that area. Be interested to know though when you’ve got yours up and running how you find them.

Re: Central Heating
I have two myself, one in bedroom and one in the living room.
Other people will have different needs and different sized rooms to heat, but for the need I have, it heats up each room just like the radiator would do but it is a lot cheaper per month than a radiator. That being said we have only used them a couple of times so far and not for a long period when we did use them, come winter and when they'll be on more often the cost effectiveness could change, but right now I have had no issues with them.

I'd be interested in how energy efficient they are as well. Look forward to your feedback.beddie wrote: ↑Sun Sep 25, 2022 1:10 pmStayingup. What I have orderd (from Amamzon) is for a trial really. Its coming from China (I guess looking at the sellers name below) and the review is below £28 delivered. Therefore as I havent received it yet I can't comment on the cost other than whgat I have read which is that they save on energy.

In reviews the best rated one is InstaHeat which retails at £59.95 for one and £39.99 each four = £159.96
Re: Central Heating
Also these oil filled radiators are said to be very good. Once heated up.they use very little energy. I bought one for my son a heating and A/C expert and he really likes it.

Still 25° and sunny here on the Costa del Sol, so we have been able to turn the aircon off since the beginning of September: that will save us a Euro or two.

We've got an infrared heater coming on Tuesday for the converted garage. Never heard of them previously, but supposed to be a cheap way of heating just one area. I'll report back.

We hardly use any gas and electric through the summer months and have amassed about £400 credit with Octopus so far - that should offset any increase for how much we normally use extra in winter so that’s a bonus.
I’m an extra jumper kind of person and the ‘rule’ before we had the little one was heating comes on in November…… just got back from a week in Tunisia at 35+* though so the hearings gone on for a bit today because the boss was cold

What I find interesting in a hot country like Spain is the use of desalination plants which ensure sufficient water supplies. Desalination got knocked back here by the Climate and animal rights lobbies(Chris Packham and .mates).

Re: Central Heating
I was tempted a couple of evenings earlier last week but decided to prevail and put on a big pullover over my already donned small pullover. Then (down in Hants at least) evening temperatures increased by a couple of degrees towards the weekend.
Next step will be to start to wear an undershirt rather than put the heating on. I'm determined not to use CH until at least September is gone, hopefully a fair few weeks longer.
In terms of energy/cost savings, I'll continue to use weather forecasts re when to do washing machine runs so I can dry clothes outside rather than use the tumble dryer. Looks like plenty of good drying days next couple of weeks at least down here.

Blue sky in Costa Brava. 22 and sunny.
I am an extra jumper man at home. The current 'tips' are for us all to go to bed with electric blanket, as much cheaper.

Re: Central Heating
If it was just me in the house, then the heating would never go on. I walked up Weets Hill in shorts last year when it was snowing.
I’m determined to keep it off for as long as possible. As it gets colder, it’s a battle with the missus I don’t think I’ll win.

Re: Central Heating
About half of heat is lost to draughts so I’m roaming the house today to seal any dodgy bits. We have a constant cold breeze coming through our front door after the glazing company ballsed it up.
Re: Central Heating
Aye, I’ve done that. Bought some silicon tape and went round all the windows and now there’s a flush seal when they are shut.CrosspoolClarets wrote: ↑Sun Sep 25, 2022 4:12 pmAbout half of heat is lost to draughts so I’m roaming the house today to seal any dodgy bits. My O level physics is telling me the radiators that are on will have to work harder to compensate from the heat loss from the ones turned off. Unless, of course, the rooms not heated are hermetically sealed and the doors never opened. There will be heat loss even then through the door surface.

Re: Central Heating
Re sealing draughts.
Isn't some ventilation necessary though? Dont people get condensation problems without a bit of ventilation?
I always have the small bathroom window at least slightly open - even in deepest winter.
At this time of year I also have a couple of (not living room) windows open during the middle of the day then just a bit open in the evening, closed at night in coldest 3/4 months.

Re: Central Heating
A lot depends on how the radiator temperature is controlled.dougcollins wrote: ↑Sun Sep 25, 2022 4:21 pmMy O level physics is telling me the radiators that are on will have to work harder to compensate from the heat loss from the ones turned off. If you have a thermostat in the hall, and you want to heat the living room only by shutting the door and turning off all the other radiators, that clearly won't work. You need the thermostat in the room you are heating.
If the boiler has the thermostat and you turn off all other radiators, that should work.
Of course 'O' level physics should tell you that these aren't 'radiators' at all.
Re: Central Heating
I've had mine on for the odd hour, I've got a really cold house that hardly gets any sun. I'll probably be more careful but I definitely won't be sitting in the cold all winter.

Yes, I'm in credit too - a mere £300+ but haven't we all got £60+ per month being knocked off our bills for the next 6 months anyway? Hopefully can get through the winter without too much damage to the account balance or hike in the DD amount (or suffering hypothermia).

I think there is a difference between ventilation and draughts that shouldn’t be there. I am securing all our draughty bits, but we have a few trickle vents on windows and the government says leave them open, I prefer to keep them shut on a cold windy night but open them in the morning, or open the window a bit. It isn’t just condensation, it is healthy fresh air with no mold etc.
We have had a sliding door put in though and the manufacturer and architect tried to insist on trickle vents, which would have shrunk the glass bit so we didn’t want. I chose no, but haven’t had a jot of condensation because its a big warm room.

£865.12 in credit how the hell do they keep taking the same amount off me each month knowing I'm in credit to the tune of almost a grand.

Agent. It will have been in anticipation of the increase, of course that’s now being reduced so you’ll probably see a reduction shortly in the monthly amount they intend to collect. We had a similar amount of credit but today they reduced our forthcoming monthly payments by £65.
