They sold it to clear debt..a huge gamble that failed miserablyclaptrappers_union wrote: ↑Mon Oct 31, 2022 8:54 amJust looking at pictures of Highfield Road on Google Images. They had a good thing going there, and the stadium would still be suitable, even by todays standards with a bit of redevelopment.

Coventry are just one of those meh clubs. Never really done much and always just seem to be there in the middle of the pack. A club that no one really talks about.

True in many respects - never played in the topflight until 1967 although they did manage an impressive unbroken 34 years at the top table they’ve gone back to their pre-1967 status really and it will probably get worse again for them before it gets better

I’ve got family in Cov but their fans - in the unlikely event you can find any who actually watch Sky blues games live - can be an odd bunch . In all the years I’ve been going down there , which is many now , I’ve met very few .

The club competes with Leicester, Villa and Birmingham for fans. All three have a more traditional and established fan base. I worked in Coventry in the seventies when the club was doing well, but it was not often you bumped into a sky blues fan.
They have apparently got permission to play on their pitch tomorrow night v Rovers

Not got much sympathy for wasps, the mk dons of rugby - only mk dons moved to a town with no significant club and built a nice new ground. Saracens and harlequins next, please.

Re: Coventry City
The D Telegraph is reporting that, Toon fans' favourite, Mike Ashley (via his Frasers company) is the favoured bidder for the CBS arena (where Coventry and Wasps play/played). This is just for the stadium and its associated facilities and doesn't include the clubs.
Frasers is already seeking planning permission to build a large new HQ facility near Coventry so there is a connection with the City. Ashley/Frasers are looking to buy the lease to the ground -not the freehold which is owned by the council.
It's thought that Frasers want to try and keep Coventry City and Wasps at the stadium but that doesn't appear to be a proviso of their offer.
I can see Coventry City staying at the stadium as there probably isnt a great alternative, I suspect Wasps will move back to London area though.

Re: Coventry City
There's a lot behind the saga of CCFC and also Wasps. The stadium was built for CCFC, Wasps moved in like a Cuckoo and took over. Not a Coventry Club, even called themselves London Wasps when they were at Loftus Road/Wycombe. Their insolvency means they have had to relinquish the lease they held on the stadium, CCFC not in a position to buy.....what a mess!!!!

Is the pub the Golden Cross?
Its right next to the old cathedral and its run by my daughter Chatlotte. Serves good ale and food, which is all gluten free...even the fish and chips and yorkshire puddings.

Re: Coventry City
When I was at uni in the late 90’s I was in halls with a Cov fan and a Villa fan. The Cov fan would get unbelievably wound up and passionate in his hatred for Villa; the Villa fan would just laugh and point out that this ‘rivalry’ was a one way street and they hated ‘the blue noses from Small Heath’. In turn, this enraged the Cov fan even more. Sort of underlined their position, that nobody really cared about them.
They don’t realistically have a two-way rival if that makes sense? Bit of a footballing no-man’s land.

The deal will involve clearing all of the Club’s current debts, leaving it debt free.

Not sure why all this negativity about Coventry. I remember around 20 of us around a radio on 1987 in France listening to them win the FA Cup ! Tommy Hutchinson scoring for both teams.

Hutch scored both ends playing for Manchester City v Spurs. Nick Pickering was playing for Coventry… don’t think Hutch went back, but he was there for a long time prior to signing for Bond at City.TheOriginalLongsider wrote: ↑Wed Nov 16, 2022 9:36 pmNot sure why all this negativity about Coventry. New signing Frank Casper scored the first goal but the second was scored by Willie Irvine, his first game back since Johnny Morrissey broke his leg in a FA Cup replay at Goodison Park in January of the same year.

It all looks very suspect to me, a guy with not a great deal of cash appears from left field, buys the club to everyone’s surprise and the current very unpopular owners stay involved.
I’d be concerned if I was a Cov fan.

If I remember it was in the last minute and I also heard a story that he thought he heard the final whistle so kicked the ball in our net to celebrate only to find out it wasn't a whistle at all, at least not the ref's. Is this true?

Re: Coventry City
They probably will be ok given that the FL fell over themselves to ensure Derby didn't fold, however you do have to question how these clubs can get into such strife.
One aspect which has surprised me is why nobody has taken the plunge on Mark Robins who is performing miracles at Cov given all the off field turmoil.

Re: Coventry City
Let this rumble on till February 1st, with them desperate for cash and us able to sign O'Hare and Gyokeres for a combined £15m or so (heavily incentivised on promotion clauses).
Then let them get sorted out to avoid any long-term issues to their club. See, I am harsh, but I am fair.

Re: Coventry City
Could it be a ploy to force the owners to sell the club to him.
He's got the ground, but it's not a lot of use without a team. He can always claim he's going to start his own club, from the bottom of the pyramid, or even do a franchise and relocate another club into the stadium.
Either way it looks like CCFC best chance is if Ashley buys them as well.

One of my dads school mates moved to Coventry and we went to visit some time in the 60s. His son was a fanatical Coventry fan and took great delight in how they recently battered us 4-1. I have never seen them as a plastic club and feel sad for how their club has been ruined.
I also remember being at Highfield Road when we beat them 3-0 with the Jimmy Adamson super team in the 70s. I thought it was then an all seater stadium but could be wrong.
