Brilliant.

In my time, we've scored some fantastic goals against them, either top finishes or well worked - Hyde, Blake, Stanislas, Arfield, Brady and Blake's 2nd in particular. I can't really think of any special goals they've scored against us in that time? Maybe I've just blocked them all out.

On a separate note, to say he scored twice against them and captained us to promotion, Shackell rarely gets spoken about with any fondness.

I started watching the Clarets on a regular basis around 1967, my paper round money paid me in and as a keen long distance runner at school, I would quite often run over to the Turf then bus it back.
So my first game against the dark side wasn't until the 70's. Even when we got relegated under Adamson I'm convinced they deliberately got themselves relegated to what was then division 3 just to avoid playing us.
So at a guess, I reckon I've seen more wins for us than losses.
Like you and others I watch for the crowds reaction after a goal and in the final picture where Ash Barnes is scoring the opening goal you can someone in a light blue top has already anticipated the goal.
Marvellous stuff. 😁

Of all the photos of all the goals that I can say I've enjoyed I wish I'd seen this one....

That Barnes photograph is magnificent. I'll never get bored of that game. The second one I meant, with fans in various stages of realisation..

Did Dave Whelan break his leg in the final? Didn't know that.

CTID, is that Ewood New Years Day 1966?
If so, I was there, my first derby game. I was on the Riverside, at that end of the ground. I can remember your Dad putting the ball in the net, from close range, as if it was yesterday.

There was a rumour but don't think it was ever mentioned by the man himself

Goals from Paul Comstive and Ian Britton provided my first win against those from the wrong end of the M65. Only a Lancashire Manx cup game but any win against them counts.

It was from the best goalscorer I've seen playing for us. Second goal down at the other end where most of our support was gathered. Still see it now; a shot from 'Bomber' Harris that went across Fred Else in their goal. Not forgetting Ralph sitting on the ball. Magic moments.⚽️⚽️🙂🙂

My first visit to Ewood for a win was Cochrane’s cracker in March 78. Brilliant strike. I was only young but seem to recall being in the enclosure in front of the main stand before it was replaced with the fat Jack stand. They must’ve allowed away fans in the enclosures in those days. It was definitely the Darwen end in 83 though when the roof caved in and the result wasn't up to much. The less said about that the better.

Its always been a massive regret of mine that there doesn't seem to be any video of Terry Cochrane's brilliant goal. It looked an absolute screamer from behind it on the Darwen End that day.

We were in the same enclosure in 1983.

The Oct’62 2-3 win at Deadwood was my first away game. I was sure Jimmy Mac had scored a pen at the Darwen end, I was sat on the surround back to the wall. On checking just now he played but didn’t score. So did he miss one?
I’m still disappointed Junior Stanislaus wonderful strike didn’t end up the winner. It would have been lauded forever.

October '63 at Ewood. 2 John Connelly goals. 2-1 win.Not only my first derby, my first game. For some reason Dad got us tickets in the stands (safety for a 7 year old I suspect). Never knew why he picked that game and when I finally asked him when he was in his late 80s, his memory was so far gone he didn't even remember being there. Kids are stupid aren't we?

It was only later I realized what a huge Burnley fan he really was. He was born and raised in the Fens and only moved to Lancashire after he married my Mum (a Colne lass) after the war. He had a season ticket for many years, went to the Cup Final when Spurs beat us, so I suspect he really didn't want to miss a derby game! When I turned 10 he gave the season ticket to me - we couldn't afford 2. Again, that realization only came to me much later. What a guy - thanks for writing this and bringing back some fond memories.

Great memories of that win on New Year's day 1966 from Ralph Coates sitting on the ball, the fan attempting to attack Adam Blacklaw and Brian Wren being ejected from the stand for calling Bryan Douglas something uncomplintery. Wrenny hadn't realised he was sat behind Douglas's wife!

Super article that Tony, and very well written. I remember all the games from the 70’s onwards, and like you say, the wins always mean so much to us. Thanks.

Very good read, thanks for writing it.

I have been there many times; probably the stand out winner was the Terry Cochrane goal since I was stood for some strange reasons amongst Blackburn fans, possibly River side but can't be sure.

I have seen us win there probably more than lose but never really enjoy it. The matches are too tense and the constant animosity makes it unpleasant but you always feel as though you should be there. If we do manage to go up I for one will not miss it.

"We were all on the Blackburn End that day but a home fan got on the pitch at the Darwen End and targeted Adam Blacklaw. Adam saw him coming and, shall we say, made contact with said supporter. I hear he’s recovering well in hospital."

Would loved to have seen this incident!

I was there at the other end of the ground and I imagine there was a lot of 'tut tutting' and shaking of heads by supporters from either side when they realised what a mistake was underway.
