Any Christmas songs you just like or even love?
On the back of Mkmel's thread I thought I'd flip it !
This is criminally underrated and just a great piece of music

No.
I hate them all... Even the Slade one, and I'm actually a big fan of Slade.

Chris De Burgh "a space man came travelling" is not bad but I have said it once and will say it again Kirsty McColl and The Pogues with "A Fairytale of New York" is the best ever

Re: Any Christmas songs you just like or even love?
I do like I Believe In Father Christmas. I saw Greg Lake at a concert in Salisbury Cathedral late-ish December many years ago. He was part of the Ian Anderson Band on that tour. He sang IBIFC beautifully, all the more so because of the setting. He also sang a wonderful version of the ELP song Lucky Man,
Anyway - back to the thread. Although this song was never particularly “cool” nor its singer artistically feted, I think it’s a lovely Christmas song.

The Pogues fairy tale of New York is a classic, TBH I quite like the Band Aid effort makes you think how lucky we are the chimes in it are haunting.

Fairytale of New York is a great song.
Also Jethro Tull "Christmas Song" which is satisfactorily miserable.

It's a real shame that the BBC have chosen to amend the lyrics of Fairytale to make it more "acceptable"

Re: Any Christmas songs you just like or even love?
My favourite Christmas song ever Steve. Stands up in its own right as a song regardless of Christmas. There is a cynicism in it that you don’t normally get in these songs.
They sold me a dream of Christmas,
They sold me a silent night,
They sold me a fairy story,
Till I believed in the Israelite.
Marvellously cynical about the commercialism of Christmas. All ending with:
Be it heaven or hell the Christmas you get you deserve.
The video is great too. Unfortunately Greg is no llonger around to sing it.

I always have a laugh when the Slade one booms out. It's a great song that was written, by Noddy Holder's own admission, during a meaningful, lunch time session in a Wolverhampton boozer It now makes him over a million a year in royalties.
My favourite is probably the Johnny Mathas "When a child is born."
