Pele
Reportedly now receiving end of life care.
I had the privilege of seeing him play in a friendly at Sheffield Wednesday. Simply the greatest player of his time.

I saw the other day that he was in a bad way.
This tweet sums Pele's impact up quite well.

Re: Pele
Pele's performances and their impact on the World Cup Finals Mexico 1970 are still for me the best I've seen. Maradona and Argentina in the same Country in 1986 close but not quite there.
It does seem to be the end this time. Very sad.

Re: Pele
Just seen this myself, such sad news.
I think some of us 'veterans' have been blessed to see some of the greatest footballers ever.
The peak of Pele's career for me was the 1970 world cup. Beautiful.
This genius will never be surpassed in my humble opinion.
Sad times.

Pele at the World Cup.
58 won
62 won
66 kicked out of it by Hungary and Portugal
70 won
The GOAT unquestionably. That’s a better hat trick than Geoff Hursts.

Too young to see him play but I understand his importance and the sense of being ahead of his time. His most memorable moments, for me at least, are all misses. Banks' save, dummying the keeper, and the attempted lob from the halfway line.

I was too young to see him live, but even as a youngster I was aware of his stature within the game.
He is easily the GOAT for me given he did it in an era when tough tackling was still very much in vogue, plus the pitches were also nowhere near the carpets they play on today.

Re: Pele
Not that many great players have scored more than 4 goals in a single World Cup.
Pele scored 12 goals in total in all his World Cup appearances but it was his performances more than anything that make him an all time great.
Maradona only got 8 goals in total but he is still best player in world ever for me - but only because I did not see enough of Pele compared to Maradona.

Re: Pele
True senior competitive figures are almost half that, the rest are filled in with games and goals even from his army days
The senior playing figure is played 792 scored 732, but 618 of those goals were scored for Santos in Brazil the rest come in the USA, never did it in a proper league, so in my eyes can't really be compared to someone who did

If Brazil were winning World Cups and the players played mainly in Brazil, not like today, how was the Brazilian league, ‘not a proper league’?.

As well as being The Greatest, he is also a great Gentleman.
So many the souless, overpaid posturing Pillocks clogging up todays game would do worse than at least try to aspire at least emulate the great man a little.

How was the game easy back then, when they played with a ball that weighed a ton, on horrendous pitches and against opponents that were allowed to kick the crap out of you?

I think with every sport, it evolves and becomes harder. Now you have super fit athletes playing in super drilled formations and paid millions to perform. Back then it was just a kick about with a bunch of half cut smokers in comparison. I don't even want to imagine how poor quality the American league was.fidelcastro wrote: ↑Sat Dec 03, 2022 10:45 pmHow was the game easy back then, when they played with a ball that weighed a ton, on horrendous pitches and against opponents that were allowed to kick the crap out of you?
No denying Pele is an icon of the sport and helped paved the way, he deserves all the respect, the best of his era. Watching 1950s football to 2022 football, it's staggering how different today's game is and how the standard has evolved.
It's no longer turn up hungover and stick the fat kid in the goal.

I don't think the likes of Banks and Yashin were just the fat kid who couldn't play upfront.
Sure, football evolves, sometimes for the better (backpass rule for example), sometimes for the worst i.e. diving, feigning injury etc, but just because they're fitter doesn't mean it's somehow harder for them now!

But you have to accept that the best players always rise to the top. If that’s in a chain smoking era or a vegan era. If you’re the best of your peers you’re the best of your peersKRBFC wrote: ↑Sat Dec 03, 2022 10:54 pmI think with every sport, it evolves and becomes harder. Re: Pele
Every sport is the same in terms of technical and physical development. You can only be the best of your own era tbh. Is Ronnie O’Sullivan better than Fred Davis? Is Lewis Hamilton better than Fangio? Is any modern day cricketer better than Sobers or Don Bradman?
Always subjective and driven by opinions of whether you saw them at their peak or not. Maradona was incredible in the mid 80s. Messi has been incredible for longer. Pele was probably incredible for longer than Messi. Unfortunately, we will never know and will always argue about it.

I have the signed programme from that friendly… Jimmy Mullen (ex- Rovers version) reported on the match for Radio Sheffield and it was among a pile of programmes he gave me, a couple of months before I first met you Tony. He stood a few feet behind the ball, trotted towards it, jumped up in the air, came down with his feet moving like scissors, and by the time they' were back on the grass the ball was in the back of the net.
A remarkable player indeed.

Such a shame during a WC as well .A remarkable player and record and always seems a genuine humble guy . It’s unfortunate “ his people “ are posting ludicrous messages from his social accounts when the poor fella is clearly closing in on his maker . They don’t make em like that anymore

Like Woodleyclaret I was lucky enough to see him play at Goodson in1966. He really was kicked out of both matches, sadly it was English referees who allowed it. At least I have the memory of being behind the goal where he scored his free kick.
It was a privilege to have seen him despite the fact that his influence in that World Cup was limited.
