Scunthorpe United
Bottom of the National League. Incredible.
Doesn't seem too long ago they beat us 2-0 at the Turf in that woeful game with Brian Laws in charge.
Crazy how quickly things can change.

I think they got promoted to the championship in 2009 beating Millwall in the play off final

Re: Scunthorpe United
It's not usually by the grace of god, it's usually because wide boys take over the club and take out rather than put in.
That could be us in a few years but for the grace of God
Re: Scunthorpe United
1987...could easily have been us, just like Scunthorpe or Oldham...would we have come back ?Nonayforever wrote: ↑Sat Dec 03, 2022 6:39 pmIt's not usually by the grace of god, it's usually because wide boys take over the club and take out rather than put in.

Wide boys didn't take over us when Lord Bob left they were local lads who made a complete mess of the job

The pub we went in before the Wembley final was the same one used by Scunny fans the day before ... Still decked out in Claret and Blue

We would have come back, first division winners FA Cup winners, European campaigns, passionate one club town we would have risen, even as a supporter owned club. I'm sure Barry Kilby once said because of our size we shouldn't have a history but we have despite our size or words to that effect.

Re: Scunthorpe United
I swear I saw Ian Botham play for Scunthorpe on the Turf. Tried Googling it and he made 11 appearances for them up until 1985. Apart from Bournemouth can’t find who the other 10 appearances were… anyone else remember?

I am pretty sure that Botham didn’t play against us. He played a few games but not the one at the Turf I think

Re: Scunthorpe United
I remember he was seen at a game, the Burnley express photographed him sat in the Bob Lord stand. Apparently, he was there to see Joe Neenan, who he’d played with at Scunthorpe.

It became a "mess of a job" during the latter years of Bob Lord's tenureship.

Yeah, think he’s good mates with Neenan. Got in a scrape with him I seem to remember (they were fighting some squadies I think). I was in the Bob Lord with my dad. Only little. Memory must have become confused!hoskinsgoalatswansea wrote: ↑Sun Dec 04, 2022 1:19 pmI remember he was seen at a game, the Burnley express photographed him sat in the Bob Lord stand. Re: Scunthorpe United
I’m not so sure. I read a couple of years after that we would probably have gone bust because we could not have sustained non league football. Badly in debt with a ground far too big to manage at that level. That win against Orient probably saved our club from extinction.bfcjg wrote: ↑Sat Dec 03, 2022 11:27 pmWe would have come back, first division winners FA Cup winners, European campaigns, passionate one club town we would have risen, even as a supporter owned club. Whenever I hear the name Scunthorpe I always think of the phrase: If Typhoo put the T in Britain who put the c*nt in Scunthorpe.

Beefy was in the programme to play at the Turf but the ECB warned him off as there was a small matter of a Test he was needed for

Re: Scunthorpe United
Thanks Woodley
Re: Scunthorpe United
The National League is full of ex football league clubs.
Notts County, Wrexham, Chesterfield, Barnet, Southend, Dagenham and REdbrige, Halifax, Aldershot, York, Yeovil, Maidstone, Torquay, Oldham and Scunny. Not such a surprise to see some of them at the bottom when there are so many.
Chester, Scarborough, Darlington, Boston and Hereford are all playing in the league below.
The gap between that league and League Two is incredibly small and it really ought to be League Three of the EFL.

Can still remember Carlisle leading the old First Division (prior to the Premier League) and that was after quite a few games

Michael Knighton even.

Not quite that bad. The lowest was 1,696 and only 5 of the 23 games had gates under 2,000.RammyClaret61 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 06, 2022 9:27 amcrowds of just over 1,000 showed a distinct lack of passion. Once out of the league it would’ve only got worse.
But yes, the Orient game had two benefits - one, like you say, it kept us out of the Conference (or bankruptcy) and stopped things getting worse. And there was no recognised belief that clubs could get back from non-league oblivion at that time; we might have thrown in the towel, or gone bust. And the other thing the Orient game did was put an extra 3,000 on the gate at the start of the next season, average 5,000+ in 87-88, backed up by Wembley that added another couple of thousand the year after.

Yeah, post Orient was the first time I started to go regularly as my parents thought I was old enough to go on the train (still lots of trouble around then remember)dsr wrote: ↑Tue Dec 06, 2022 12:45 pmNot quite that bad. The lowest was 1,696 and only 5 of the 23 games had gates under 2,000.

Re: Scunthorpe United
Everything about the club was flat pre- the Orient game. It was like all the life had been sucked out of the club, top to bottom. Lowest I’ve ever felt (outside of bereavement) was the mid week game away at Crewe, no one there at full time would have believed the Orient result, never mind the poor good fortune of other results… and Tommy Hutchinson.Lancasterclaret wrote: ↑Tue Dec 06, 2022 12:53 pmYeah, post Orient was the first time I started to go regularly as my parents thought I was old enough to go on the train (still lots of trouble around then remember)

That was the turning point, the town and club reconnected and twelve months later we were at Wembley!

Have to share this crazy coincidence. I work in the media and was booked in for a shoot today with a ‘Lord’ … didn’t know who until just now. Turns out it’s Ian Botham ha ha ha. Weird!

Remember going to The Old Showground towards the end of the "Orient" season. What a crumbling pile that was. Also had some good away days at Glandford Park - lots of fireworks going off one year . Shame to see them where they are. As for Botham, he's full of ****.
Re: Scunthorpe United
I think there are around 50 clubs who have played in the FL including Accrington and Accrington Stanleydibraidio wrote: ↑Tue Dec 06, 2022 9:02 amThe National League is full of ex football league clubs.

Missed off Bradford PA and in even lower leagues are Workington Macclesfield and Bury-all at some stage in the FL since the restart after WW2. also New Brighton a league team we played in the FA Cup on the 50's and many more who were in the leagues from the early 1900's including Nelson I think Darwen and Glossop NE and many more like Merthyr Durham Ashington, Northwich Victoria and I think Stalybridge as well as clubs wound up and never resurrected
