It’s a terribly sad existence when your only joy in life comes from schadenfreude. It must be a celtic thing. No wonder the national colour is green.

Re: Tactics for Saturday
I get that. The thing is, with England there is always the possibility of it happening. It has before and maybe someday it will happen again, or maybe not. No one with any grasp on reality would ever envisage the same for any of the ‘perpetually in the shadows” Celtic nations. So carry on celebrating when superior nations lose if it makes you happy for a short while.
Re: Tactics for Saturday
To be fair, we always laugh at Scotland's performances in the World Cup Finals.
Well, the post-war baby boomers do. And the rest of us would if we got the chance!

You should read up on the historic persecution of the Irish by the English.

Hmmmmm.... I'm good with people enjoying England's inevitable failure on the grounds that they're an over_hyped, entitled, boring passionless pile of overrated dogsh1t.
But not dislike of anyone purely on the grounds of race..its not on..you know it and I know it.

Re: Tactics for Saturday
That wasn't racist, if you read up a bit more history you'll see that we persecuted lots of other nationalities too Besides, the Pope (Adrian 4th, not Nick) granted England the right to govern Ireland, I'll concede that Adrian was the only English Pope there's ever been, but I'm sure that was purely coincidental to his decision.roperclaret wrote: ↑Wed Dec 07, 2022 7:16 pmYou should read up on the historic persecution of the Irish by the English.

Re: Tactics for Saturday
I think you are right bfcmik. My son and I were discussing this very issue last night.
I think in the end though, I persuaded him that for a more balanced team the No 5 needs to be moved out more towards the left wing.
I'm not saying all the way out left, just more left. We can't be overly cautious.
Re: Tactics for Saturday
TBF I have always wanted Ireland to do well at Tournaments (but not at the detriment to England) as I have many Irish Friends & we always have a bit of banter over games (but wish each other well). But no why would they want us to win a World Cup....
The Scots/Welsh have always been anyone but England (& more so than the Irish as I have found)

Re: Tactics for Saturday
Giroud plays such an important role for France, equally as important to stop him holding the ball up for Mbappe and Dembele. Whoever our fastest winger is I would play on Mbappes side to try and make him defend

Re: Tactics for Saturday
Lovely to see a few folk coming on a thread to tell us they don’t care
The danger is that everyone is making it all about one man. France have plenty of other players but equally France will be concerned about the number of stars we have at our disposal.

Re: Tactics for Saturday
France should be more worried about how to deal with Bellingham, Foden, Saka and Kane, than we are about Mbappe, who Walker has dealt with very well every time he’s played him.
Re: Tactics for Saturday
You seem to assume that England should deal with Mbappe very easily if Walker is playing and there is little else to worry about.
Re: Tactics for Saturday
I don’t necessarily think that’s the case. He’s clearly an outstanding player but I’m just stating Walker has kept him quiet on several occasions in the Champions League. France obviously have other top players but there is a lot of Mbappe hype and worry, when I believe we have even better attacking talents than them (overall) on the pitch with the names I stated.
Kane > Giroud
Foden > Dembele
Bellingham > Griezmann

Re: Tactics for Saturday
Hopefully I am wrong but I can see Southgate reverting to 5 at the back
Pickford
Trippier Walker Maguire Stones Shaw
Rice Henderson
Saka Kane Foden

Re: Tactics for Saturday
Think I read out of x amount of games against the 'big nations' like France, he has played a back 5 on 64% of occasions.claretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 08, 2022 8:12 amHopefully I am wrong but I can see Southgate reverting to 5 at the back

You might be right but I just can't see how he can drop Bellingham after his displays so far - that would surely be criminal.
France play with a back 4 too, so it's not like playing a 5 matches them, like he did when he switched to a 5 against Germany in the Euros.

Re: Tactics for Saturday
Of course it’s racism, if I’d have posted on here during the cricket World Cup that I wanted “anyone but Pakistan” to win the usual suspects would have been all over it.

Re: Tactics for Saturday
Fully agree but Gareth has form. There probably isn't another manager at the tournament who given our squad would start games with Foden on the bench. I think he will like the idea of Trippier up against Mbappe with the safety next of Walker inside Trips.RVclaret wrote: ↑Thu Dec 08, 2022 8:18 amThink I read out of x amount of games against the 'big nations' like France, he has played a back 5 on 64% of occasions.

Hopefully I am wrong and his words about attacking them aren't hollow ones.

If your post had been made purely because you don't like Pakistanis, HL, yes they would.
If you'd posted it for cricketing reasons, no they wouldn't.

Re: Tactics for Saturday
You make a great point regarding Mbappe for all his talent he rarely likes getting back and defending, so that's an area where England might get some success if Gareth is brave enough to employ offensive tactics.Vegas Claret wrote: ↑Wed Dec 07, 2022 11:51 pmGiroud plays such an important role for France, equally as important to stop him holding the ball up for Mbappe and Dembele. Re: Tactics for Saturday
that's always been my issue with Southgate, lack of bravery in the big games. I hope he's learned from our defeat to Croatia and Italy, fingers crossed
