Finsley Gate Wharf
What an improvement! The Manager, Peter, fitted us in at short notice on New Year's Day. Last time we went was Spring 2022 and it was not great but this time food and service was excellent. Nice atmosphere, very good staff and managed a few drinkies. 2023 has been good so far and we will be back soon, to celebrate more points for The Clarets

The fact that you called them “drinkies” makes your point invalid.

The food is bloody terrible and the place is badly ran. They had run out of half the menu.

Just before Xmas. Nipped in on a Saturday for lunch. The place is really nicely done, the beer was good but the food was a real let down sadly.

Absolutely, it was similar to the standard of food that you would expect at the Queen Vic but at a much higher price point. I would advice anybody looking for a decent meal give this a swerveClaret Till I Die wrote: ↑Tue Jan 03, 2023 2:18 pmWe've been several times and never been disappointed. Each to their own I suppose

Never seen or heard it being compared to the Queen Vic. Did you mention it to the management on the day ?

Bit harsh. May have been an off day or they may have actioned improvements for the new year (as the OP alludes to). Hospitality has had an incredibly tough period and it think it’s fair to give a little leeway especially for (relatively) new businesses.Penwortham_Claret wrote: ↑Tue Jan 03, 2023 2:20 pmAbsolutely, it was similar to the standard of food that you would expect at the Queen Vic but at a much higher price point. Re: Finsley Gate Wharf
I fully agree. Hopefully they have turned a corner as the place is nice and Burnley, especially that area, need more places like this.
Sadly for them, there’s enough local places that offer nice food at a better price which means it’s unlikely people will give 2nd chances after a poor experience

I've not been to Finsley Gate Wharf but if you don't need to be close to town I recommend Sycamore Farm down Liverpool road across from that old cricket pitch. Best food in East Lancs bar none and the cliental is very respectful (no tracky bottoms or baseball caps)

Re: Finsley Gate Wharf
I only know of two couple who have been there, once a few times the other once, and they tell me the food was nice and it was worth it.
I’ve been meaning to go, and will hopefully get around to it in the coming weeks.

Just looked at the menu at Sycamore Farm, gosh, a good choice at very reasonable cost. It’s somewhere we’ll have to try, perhaps at the end of this month as we have an excuse with it being my birthday.

We like Finsley Gate Wharf even though it’s out of town for us and I also don’t mind Psycho Farm for a cheap and cheerful meal with a normally decent selection of beer!

Re: Finsley Gate Wharf
In all seriousness, I've never been to Psycho Farm. We went to the QV for a relative's birthday. Can't fault their hard-working young staff, but the food is very poor quality. Spoons serve up better ping-food than the QV.

Re: Finsley Gate Wharf
Places like Queen Vic and Sycamore Farm are hit and miss as they go through ‘chefs’ in no time. Some days the food is ok and others it’s poor. But it’s cheap so that’s a chance you take.
Sycamore Farm does tend to have a good choice of beer though.
Been to Finlsey Gate Wharf just once and it was quite decent. The food is basic but it was much fresher than you get at Sycamore and not microwave heavy.

Re: Finsley Gate Wharf
I don't get the derision towards Sycamore Farm at all. It is what it is... A large chain pub which caters for everybody with cheap food served consistently. I'm not saying it's the best food, but it's not rubbish either.
It perhaps offers an alternative to families who might want to serve up a change to eating at home, but can't afford to go to the Michelin starred restaurants you guys seem to dine at, after you've called in "the best pub in Burnley" The Bridge to quaff down some obscure Belgian pale ale you claim to have heard of

Re: Finsley Gate Wharf
I bet they don't really chef anything from scratch. Most of their food is probably bought in and deep-fried or pinged. This is why they have so many items on their menus. But it is what it is, and obviously some people enjoy going therearise_sir_charge wrote: ↑Tue Jan 03, 2023 3:37 pmPlaces like Queen Vic and Sycamore Farm are hit and miss as they go through ‘chefs’ in no time.

By the way, you don't have to pay 'fine dining' prices to have decent food. There are plenty of country pubs in our area that manage to serve up good food without it costing a small fortune.

Re: Finsley Gate Wharf
A number of us went on the 29th of December.
An absolute shambles. We had reserved a table and were virtually the only ones in the place. It took them almost an hour to seat us and take our orders. A number of dishes on the menu were not available.
When the food arrived 45 minutes later it was decidedly average. We were unable to get a drink even at the bar. The bill took almost another 30 minutes to arrive.
Next year we will be going back to the excellent Glen View pub in Cornholme.
