March 1975 and had Arsenal got something from their game with Everton we'd have gone top of the league. We were there and it was not all seater.Cirrus_Minor wrote: ↑Mon Dec 05, 2022 1:26 pmOne of my dads school mates moved to Coventry and we went to visit some time in the 60s. His son was a fanatical Coventry fan and took great delight in how they recently battered us 4-1. I have never seen them as a plastic club and feel sad for how their club has been ruined.
I also remember being at Highfield Road when we beat them 3-0 with the Jimmy Adamson super team in the 70s. I thought it was then an all seater stadium but could be wrong.

It wasn't All -Seater later that year either, when we won that 'rough' encounter 2-1.
But pretty sure they were one of the first grounds to put seats all over, when Jimmy Hill was chairman.

Then Leeds fans ripped them up so terrace was reinstated until all-seaters became mandatory later in the 90s.
But for a short period it was the first all-seater in the country.

Who actually owned the stadium to sell it to Mike Ashley?
Strange they didn't sell it to Coventry (who bid more than Ashley)

I was told today by a Cov fan that the club owe a lot of back rent for the ground and are trying to defer payments for the debt whilst also trying to renegotiate the amount they pay downwards. I think Ashley and CCFC are playing brinkmanship tbh

That’s interesting.
I had no idea Ashley owned the stadium until I read it today, but piecing that together my gut feel is that Ashley wants to put them in to Admin to pick them up in the cheap?

Re: Coventry City
They've got no money.
Wages to turnover is 111%
They don't generate much via player sales, we've made more in one sale (Wood) than they did for a decade.
They've got debts of just under £40 million.
They just don't have the money to buy and maintain the stadium, unless they've got a rich owner to do it for them

Do we know the financial situation of the new owners though? supposedly bid £25m for the stadium after taking over.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 05, 2022 6:29 pmThey've got no money.

Don’t think they are the new owners yet, there’s been appeals on the legalities of the takeover and it’s currently sat with the EFL. But yeah they did say that.

Re: Coventry City
Seems a terrible situation for the fans. If the club and Ashley are playing brinkmanship as someone suggested neither of them have a particularly strong hand!! He owns a stadium with no obvious alternative use and they are skint! That part of Coventry isn't the best so I can' imagine there would be any money in redevelopment, even if he could get planning permission, which is likely to be difficult anyway because I would imagine the stadium is likely to be allocated in the Local Plan for its given purpose.

Whilst I’m not sure it would be sustainable without the football, there is a lot more to the Ricoh than the football alone. It’s a huge complex with all kinds of facilities included.
I have little sympathy for Coventry, their fans were appalling in celebrating Wasps demise. I think I posted on here that I found it odd seeing as they were their landlords and so it could cause them major issues.

Somewhat ironically Wasps plays at Darlington on Saturday at the doomed arena built by that crook George Reynolds. Would serve Ashley right if his games backfired and he ends up with a similar white elephant on his hands.

Arena Coventry Limited who were in administration, Ashley/Fraser Group put in £1.2m to keep them running (allowing Coventry to have somewhere to play whilst this was ongoing) and secure preferred bidder status.

Coventry City have signed a new rental deal that will allow them to continue playing at the CBS Arena until the end of the season.
The Championship side were given an eviction notice on December 5 by the stadium’s new owners, Mike Ashley’s Frasers Group – meaning a new licence had to be agreed.

I remember Jimmy Hill made a thing about making it the first all seater using the terraces etc for seating. Higher prices but best seats for away fans, comes to mind. Highfield Road was initially all seater between 1981 and 1985 .. putting seats in reduced the capacity from 36500 to around 20500 and went down like a lead balloon in Coventry.

As you say, they stayed in the top division for well over 30 years, although having gone down they've never looked like coming back.

Indeed the average gate at Highfield Road went down by around 5,000 between 80/81 and 81/82 as Mr Hill bumped
ST prices up considerably over the summer of 1981 , though gates did improve again in subsequent years .

Re: Coventry City
I remember them winning the second division in 1966-67. They got some huge crowds at Highfield Road. I went to their match at Ewood. Really big following. 1-0. Bobby Gould got their winner in front of a Blackburn End packed full of them. Of course, this was the away end then.thehistorylecturer2 wrote: ↑Wed Dec 14, 2022 7:24 pmIndeed the average gate at Highfield Road went down by around 5,000 between 80/81 and 81/82 as Mr Hill bumped

Yes some big crowds during their promotion season and first few years in the topflight .. declined in the 70s and 80s in tandem with a general fall in attendances everywhere but particularly so in the Midlands during a period of rapid deindustrialisation

Seems a long time ago that Paul Fletcher was being lorded as a genius for his work on the move out of Highfield Road to his new age stadium. I think Alan Stevenson also played a commercial director roll there, but admit I may be mis-remembering him at Coventry.

Coventry is a decent club. Highfield Rd was a proper ground. The only thing I have against them is their connection with Jimmy Hill and his proposal to abolish the maximum wage which was the starting point for the ridiculous wages we now see.

It did, but it put the power in the hands of the players rather than the clubs meaning that wages became more important than transfer fees. Rather than clubs auction players for the best fee players auction themselves for the best wage.boatshed bill wrote: ↑Tue Jan 10, 2023 5:55 pmDidn't Bosman start the freedom of contract thing rather than the abolition of the maximum wage?
