I was quite pleased with the battling performance today. It showed some fighting qualities of the squad. The pitch played a large part in the game and I suspect that Ipswich prepared it to prevent any flowing football. It was never going to be pretty but the lads stuck at it and got a result. Well done to them.

Good to get an hour in for Bastien, Twine and Churlinov against a tricky opponent . Bastien looks as if he needs more games to get used to the style of football in England . Churlinov coming back from a lengthy spell out looked good with the ball in tight spaces but didn’t really get much involvement today. Twine looked a bit too deep but maybe that was due to the way the game was panning out, saying that he played some great cross field passes with both feet.

Cork wasn’t at the races today which had a major effect on our overall game.

BPF 6 - did ok, passing needed to be crisper at times
Vitinho 6 - some good bits but could tell he’s been out a while
Al-Dakhil 8* - brilliant debut, composed, quick and used the ball better than anyone
Beyer 7 - limited them to not much
Taylor 5 - really poor use of the ball, ponderous, caught out of position a few times too
Bastien 5 - meh, poor use of the ball
Cork 6 - a bit better than Bastien
Tella 6 - ran a lot
Twine 7 - used the ball really well, there were a couple of times he found good space but didn’t receive the ball
Churlinov 7 - looked threatening
Rodriguez 5 - struggled again, snatched at two good chances

Brownhill 6 - didn’t add much
Zaroury 6 - couple of nearly moments
Cullen 6 - tried to get us playing
Foster 6 - showed some promising glimpses

Portman Road pitch 2 - what an absolute shocker and shame that two good footballing teams couldn’t play much football on the deck due to the surface, players slipping everywhere

I’d start Al-Dakhil and Twine at Norwich.

BPF - 6 - Nothing much to do other than the two mishit crosses. Distribution poor.
Vitinho - 5 - Easy to see why Roberts has become first choice, not a RB for me, better playing further forward.
Al Dakhil - 7 - Steady debut, will come good with game time I'm sure.
Bayer - 6 - Silly yellow card early on.
Taylor - 5 - Worst game I've seen from him in a while.
Cork - 6 - Missed Cullen alongside him, not his usual self.
Bastien - 6 - He's not Cullen, but I still think there's a player in there somewhere.
Tella - 7 - Worked hard, worked the back line, didn't press as a team at times leaving him to chase a lot on his own.
Twine - 7 - Happy enough for a first start, worked hard, unlucky with a few distant strikes.
Churlinov - 5 - +1 for the run into the box first half that deserved to be finished, otherwise struggling to see where he fits in, not good enough.
J Rod - 5 - Few times now this season, had more than enough chances in a game to put us out of sight, needs to get his shooting boots back on.

Cullen - 6 - Changed the game with his movement and sharpness, as expected really.
Brownhill - 6 - Ran a few channels, not much else.
Zaroury - 6 - Squared his man up a few times and created a few half chances.
Foster - 6 - Good first touch, powerful and fast, hopefully with a few more training sessions will be firing on all cylinders.
Roberts - N/A

May be a little critical on a few, but having set our standards so high this season, its hard not to be critical, especially knowing how good each and every one of these players can be. A poor showing today, smash them in the replay, but now we look forward to another tricky game at Norwich next week.

BPF 7 - must be difficult when your only getting a game every few weeks in the cup. But I’d be fine with him if Muric got injured
Vitinho 7 - our best player in the first half
Al Dakhil 7 - clearly nervous first 20 mins, but looks comfortable with both feet, and not scared to go in where it hurts
Beyer 7 - his positioning is great
Taylor 7 - coping well with having to transition between CB and LB
Cork 6 - worked hard but not on top of his game today
Bastien 6 - another who I think is suffering from playing different positions every time he gets a start
Twine 6 - JGB could teach him a thing or two about playing that 10 role
Churlinov 6 - looks like he could be dangerous but really needs to work on his first touch
Jay 7 - always an out ball to feet for our defenders
Tella 6

Cullen 7
Brownhill 6
Zaroury 7
Foster 6 - needs to learn quickly about holding the ball and bringing the team up the pitch.

Thought Ipswich were decent, better than a lot of Champ teams.

BPF-7
Vitinho 6
Beyer 7
Al Dakhill 7 very good debut
Taylor 6-ponderous
Tella 6
Cork 6, his lack of strength and pace is costing him a yellow every other game, and hes not a dirty player
Twine 7, some great passes and vision-impressed in his first start
Churlinov 6, some nice dribbles in first half and made a good couple of chances
Bastian 5-not involved enough for a midfielder
Jay 6, one great shot but also another poor miss. Can see him losing his place when Foster settles in

Zarorry 6
Brownhill 6
Foster 6
Cullen 7 (missed him today)

I would like to see VK out this same lineup out in the replay and tell them to go out and beat them. Will be another good test for those players who need the game time

BPF 6 - ok but nearly dropped a clanger at the death and his distribution was questionable at times.

Vitinho 4 - too casual at times (got lucky a few times) and his accuracy of passing often leaves a lot to be desired.
Al Dakhil 7 - promising debut and grew into the game once the changes were made and he had better options in front of him, i.e. Cullen.
Beyer 7 - shaky first half and rightly booked. Got better as the game wore on. Can’t have been easy playing alongside a different partner again.
Taylor 6 - another who was way off it in the first half. Better second half and a crucial block near the end.

Cork 6 - covered a lot of ground and always showing for the ball but not at his best today.
Bastien 5 - just not sure what type of midfielder he is. Not particularly strong, doesn’t spray the passes around or bring any energy. I keep waiting for him to play well but it isn’t happening….

Churlinov 6 - one excellent run in the first half and a very bright start to the second half. Unlucky to be hooked as could’ve been any of the forwards. Would like to see him on the right in Benson’s absence.
Tella 5 - the lad is not a winger. Not in the game at all on the first half and didn’t get the luck of the bounce a couple of times on the second. One good effort but way off it.
Twine 6 - picked the ball up in some nice pockets. Good touch and awareness. Unlucky to be subbed.
Rodriguez 5 - it’s just not happening for Jay at the moment. Had 2 or 3 chances but his all round game was off today.

Zaroury 7 - made things happen!
Cullen 7 - helped us retain the ball and start moves off. Tidy and we missed him when he wasn’t on the pitch today.
Brownhill 7 - made some good forward runs and brought some energy to proceedings.
Foster 5 - not really involved. Linked play a couple of times and had one power puff effort at goal.

The problem today was that we made too many changes to the team and we weren’t as cohesive as normal. This has always been a problem - similar to when Dyche used to make 9 or 10
changes for the cup games. The team always looked ok on paper but, although the players had obviously trained together, they hadn’t played together and it always showed with a lack of cohesion and familiarity. This showed again today with the seven changes made in my opinion.

It’s also difficult to break teams down with the way that we play when you don’t have a threat on both sides and, again, we didn’t today. With no Benson, JBG or Zaroury (and Tella not being a winger) we had no threat on the right hand side for much of the game. When Zaroury came on I would personally have liked to see Churlinov go the right side and have a winger on each side so we could drag the opposition from side to side.

A clean sheet and still in the hat though!

Pros are we are still in the cup and should make fifth round. Al Dakhil had a very strong debut and we kept a clean sheet
Only negative is an extra game in the schedule. But that might not be a bad thing with players needing game time to bed in

BPF-6 nowt to do
Vithino-4 sloppy and wasteful
Taylor-7 good blocks but passing soso
Beyer-6 steady
Al-Dakil-6 steady debut nervous 1st half looks ok
Cork-6 busy if a bit slow, it’s costing him
Bastien-6 ok if a little limited
Twine-6 decent start and couple of crosses
Tella-6 he’s a top player but miles off today
Churilnov-6 again , reasonable if wasteful
Jay-6 little service , 1 tough chance and nearly scored a screamer .

BPF- 6. Shaky passes put us under unnecessary pressure in the first half. Poor communication coming for crosses and clashing with defenders.

Vitinho- 6. Steady. Thought defensively he had improved and did well to recover if out of position.

Al-Dakhil- 6. Did the basics well. Decent enough for a debut playing with new team mates.

Beyer-8. MOTM. Only player at the back who looked to bring the ball out and play expansively. Solid defending as always.

Taylor- 6. Defensively solid enough. Poor distribution. Old habits die hard and all too often looks to play balls down the sides for runners.

Bastien- 6.Average. Picked the ball up in the first half on a number of occasions and was too slow to release Vitinho, allowing Ipswich defender to come across.

Cork- 6. Looked half a yard short of pace today. Struggled in a 2 with Bastien. Couldn’t get hold of the ball and dictate play but was pressed relentlessly.

Tella- 6. Looked to break on occasion but couldn’t get free.

Twine- 5. Most disappointing performance of the lot. Non-existent. Too lightweight and offered nothing. Concerning performance against league 1 opposition.

Churlinov- 6. Couple of mazy runs. Set J-Rod up.

J-Rod- 6. Really lacking in confidence in front of goal. Worked hard to link up play.

Brownhill, Cullen, Zaroury, Foster- 5. Surprisingly unable to affect the game. With the addition of Brownhill and Cullen we really should have taken a grip in the middle.

Opinions and that but he had the best passing accuracy in the team today at 96% (24/25), including 2 line breaking quick forward passes. That backs up my comments earlier up that he used the ball quite well. Not bad going given it was his first start all season and the pitch was crap. I’d personally start him in front of Cullen / Brownhill at Norwich.

Just got back to Chesterfield - poor stuff I thought today. Struggled to really manage the game at any point and Ipswich really pressed us. Difficult day and in the end glad to just get a second pop at them.

BPF - 6- Felt we missed Muric today. BPF kicking was alright generally but he’s far slower to move the ball than Muric.
Vitinho - 7 - Seemed one of the most ‘up for it’.
Beyer - 6 - Rash early booking and poor distribution at times.
Al-Dakhil - 7 - Thought he looked quite assured.
Taylor - 5 - Poor use of the ball, offered nothing going forwards. Missed Maatsen!
Cork - 5 - Big fan of Jack but he was miles off the pace today.
Bastien - 5 - Didn’t offer much really.
Twine - 7 - Thought he was bright and tried to make things happen, put a lovely ball through for Churlinov. Don’t know why he was subbed.
Tella - 5 - Poor, fell over too much.
Churlinov - 5 - Has a lot to prove but early days. A couple of good runs but struggles to use the ball well.
Rodriguez - 5 - Looks a ways off it at the moment does Jay.

Foster - 6 - A few nice lay offs and touches.
Brownhill - 6
Cullen - 6
Zaroury - 6

Just one of those days today. No harm done.

Why ?
Both have been excellent and both are quite different players to Twine.
Cullen is integral to the way we play and keep hold of the ball.
Brownhill offers that bit of aggression and strength.

Norwich have picked up some form since the new manager came in and this is likely to be a really tough game.
I’m all for seeing more of Twine but think VK will ease him in slower and against easier opponents or once we have secured promotion. He’s also got a good chance of playing in the cup replay. But right now he’s not in our first 11. He’s probably not in are first 12 or 13 either (when everyone is fit). And Cullen, Brownhill and others have done nothing to deserve being dropped.

Sorry, I mean Twine playing just ahead of the two I mentioned, positionally speaking. With Cork suspended and JBG out, it’s between him and Bastien isn’t it? I’d go for Twine as JB and JC look better together than Bastien with either.

Oh sorry.
Yep possibly - but JBG might be back and played very well in midfield when he came on the other week.
Again I don’t think it’s a game where VK will start Twine irrespective of who is fit or not.
Great to have this kind of quality on the bench though - we are going to have some pretty good players who do not even make the bench in the rest of this season. Twine might even be one of them (hope not)

Vitinho looked like a player who had missed a few weeks

Bastien is decent cover at this level but too similar to Cork and without the same positional awareness and momentum - they don't work as a two

Brownhill to play deeper at Norwich with Tella in the 10 role - plus we need to revert to two out and out wingers even if that means Churlinov switching sides if JBG is out

Bastien 5 - just not sure what type of midfielder he is. Not particularly strong, doesn’t spray the passes around or bring any energy. I keep waiting for him to play well but it isn’t happening….

This for me is the perfect summary albeit he did ok against West brom. I just can't quite tell where he fits in the midfield, part of me wonders if he's one of those players more suited to the higher league and the other wonders if he'll adapt to the English league at all. Don't want to criticize too much because in reality he's not played enough to give a fair assessment. It could be that he's not been able to hit his stride without a run of games.

Well, though I thought we were in no danger of losing, we didn't do enough to win

Pitch shocking, but we just didn't move the ball quick enough, didn't press quick enough, didn't switch it quick enough and didn't make any decisions quick enough

Still created the best of what few chances there were, but again, snatched at them

Still in the hat though, and Ipswich were a very useful side

BPF 6 - kicking improved after a poor start
Vitinhio 5 - not great, but looked better defensively than he can do
Al 7 - very assured debut
Beyer 7* - silly booking at the start, but faultless after that
Taylor 6 - solid, but again another full back not having his best day
Churlinov 6 - some good, some not so good, but he needs game time
Cork 6- struggled a bit, but was pressed relentlessly and not enough support to give him options
Bastien 7 - ok, he needs to move it quicker, but he was calm on the ball and played ok
Twine 6 - another one who needs game time. Couple of good passes
Tella 6 - worked his socks off but not a lot of quality
Jay 6 - absolutely fine until he shoots, then its just not happening there for him

Subs
Zaroury 6
Cullen 6
Brownhill 6
Foster 6

Thought we were well on top when we made the triple substitution btw, so not sure we needed to make it at that time but hey ho, we can't win or be perfect every match

It is a very long way to Ipswich from Lancaster btw! Just got back now and the M6 was closed at Preston

Upon reflection, I’m probably being a little harsh with my criticism as it was his first start.

But against League 1 opposition and after his goal against WBA, I was hoping, if not expecting, Twine to take a bit more of a hold of this game.

Coming away from yesterday, my biggest concern re Twine was his lack of physicality, (which I believe Kompany has been working on).

Like a few players, he’s probably victim to us having progressed at a quicker rate than expected. In 6 months, we’ll be a PL team barring disaster, and it’s arguably come round at least 12 months too soon for some, Twine being one of them.

Very harsh on Twine, I thought he was our best attacking player up to the point he was taken off. Looked the most likely for us by some distance.

Tella offered a lot less yesterday and is also lightweight, yet has been a key player this season in the league. I wouldn’t read too much into it. Yes he’s a bit slimmer but that’s the profile you usually get as a 10, as they need to be able to be nimble / agile in tight spaces. Benson is as lightweight as it gets but he’s done alright!

From t v
Peacock 7 not much to do really, average distribution
Vitinho 6 gave the ball away too much
Al dakhill 8 impressive debut, composed on the ball and gives us height in defence
Beyet 7 anothet solid performance, though silly yellow card
Taylor 6 not as good as usual
Cork 6 I think he took it easy in the second half
Bastien 6 does the basics well but needs to get into the game more
Twine 6 has good vision, needs time
Churlinov 6 good in bits
Tella 6 worked very hard
Jayrod 7 did a lot of good work deeper in midfield, no luck in front of goal

Cullen 7 did well
Brownhill 6 didnt get into game that much
Zaroury 7 some good runs and always looks dangerous
Another clean sheet against a good Ipswich team, happy with a draw and a replay, which will give more game time to our new players.

BPF 6 very little to do
Vitinho 5 bit sloppy defending passing poor
Al-Dakhil 8 did ok grew into the game good first appearance
Beyer 7 got a poor card early but another steady game
Taylor 6 ok defending poor going forward and passing
Cork 5 poor performance
Bastien 5 needs to influence the game more
Twine 6 good feet just needs more game time
Churlinov 5 one good run but doesn’t seem to have the pace for a winger
Tella 6 good work rate
Jayrod 5 needs a goal badly

Cullen 7 good work rate
Brownhill 5 didn’t get to involved
Zaroury 7 good

Not anywhere near to our usual performances think the game would have suited Sir Bashley upfront but with our new signings unfortunately wouldn’t be surprised if he leaves before the window shuts
