Quick one - self assessment tax return

Post by clarety » Sat Jan 28, 2023 7:52 pm

Hello. An exciting topic for a Saturday night! Some clever people on here so thought I'd just put it out there. Have HMRC changed the way you declare your expenses for a self-assessment? It's categorised but I remember it being earnings and expenses as two figures and then the tax you owe. Is that still the case somehow? Just a little enquiry. Hope that's okay. Thanks. UTC.

Hi
Income and expenses are reported in separate boxes.
If your income is less than £85k you can report your expenses as a single figure.
Does that answer your question or is there anything else I might be able to help with?

Hello, thanks. Yes, I have previously reported expenses as a single figure but this time, for some reason, I'm not getting that option. It takes me straight to the more detailed, categorised way of doing it and to be honest I don't understand half of the categories! I'd rather do it as a single figure. Is there something I may have ticked to stop me from reporting it as a single figure?

On the previous page you need to say your turnover is less than £85k and that you want to report your expenses as a single figure.
It should give you the option then.

Thanks, I know what you mean as it's something I've done before but this year I just can't see that option. I enter my turnover (less than £85k) and then the next page is the detailed expenses breakdown with no choice of the single figure. Frustrating. Thanks for your help, I'll keep trying!

At the start of the section there is a question about whether or not your turnover is less than £85k.
You need to select No and then say you want to enter your expenses as a single figure.

I am one. I’m filing these in constantly at the moment. I wish I could post images to make this more obvious.
I hope clarety is ok and am willing to continue to help.

Thanks Zooniverser, that's really kind. Had a breakthrough tonight. Dim moment. Had just accidentally clicked something earlier on.
