Turf Moor from Leeds
Turf Moor from Leeds
I guess there are quite a few clarets from the Leeds area. Personally I’d go quite a bit if the transport was more appealing. Eg I’d take my lad to the Ipswich replay. But realistically the trains are crap and the drive is horrific and that’s enough to stop me ever going these days. Crap transpennine infrastructure. Wondering if anyone else is in the same boat.

They're supposed to be electrifying the line from Leeds, which should improve things. Then again they've been saying that for decades now.

Trains aren't that bad if you live anywhere near the station.
Midweek is a problem with getting back though.

Re: Turf Moor from Leeds
I live in Ilkley so the drive isn't so bad via Skipton.
Re: Turf Moor from Leeds
Yeah mainly a midweek problem although even on a Saturday it feels like a full day mission. Both of the driving options - Via Aire valley or M62/ Calder valley - are fairly horrible.

I suppose plenty of people commute it every day. I feel truly sorry for them.
Re: Turf Moor from Leeds
Transport to and from Burnley and neighbouring towns is dire. In between Leeds and Manchester but may aswell be on the moon.

Re: Turf Moor from Leeds
I drive over from Leeds every game - it’s not ideal, but it’s a choice I made when I moved to Leeds.
Quickest way is M66, M62
Shortest way is over through Hebden and Halifax.
I work in North Yorkshire, so midweek games I have to really plan ahead!
Most of the time, I have 2 free seats, LS7, if you ever want a lift.

Re: Turf Moor from Leeds
Most often it's the Blubberhouses for me, but in spring I regularly go over Bishopdale and Wharfedale. I often think I must have the most scenic journey of anyone, anywhere, to get to a football match. The journey alone is worth it.
I would suggest you take a back road, and just enjoy God's beautiful countryside. Take your time, and wallow in it.

Re: Turf Moor from Leeds
LCC are ruining the route to the station. They have closed City Square and are basically ruining all routes to the station. I literally live just over a mile away from the Station and if I get dropped off, it can take ages to get there. On the way back, if I get a taxi, I can be waiting upwards of an hour due to the congestion.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Tue Jan 31, 2023 12:45 pmTrains aren't that bad if you live anywhere near the station.

Trains have improved massively on that line over the last few years - it’s 40 mins from where I get on at Bradford and pretty reliable. Enough late options post game as well.

Re: Turf Moor from Leeds
I make the trip to Leeds and back once a week for work. I don’t know how far Elland Rd is from my office but our office is in the LS 16 area. I go via Ilkley, then on to the A65 towards clitheroe and use the colne turn off to get back to Burnley which usually takes 1hr 30 mins. It seems to be the best route having done Keighley, Halifax, and the horrendous m62 route which took nearly 2 hours.LS7 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 31, 2023 12:40 pmI guess there are quite a few clarets from the Leeds area. Easy to get back after night matches on the trains these days. They used to stop at 21.50 but you can get them back at 22.20 & 22.59 now which even accounts for extra time.
If you are driving, come off at Jcn 24 and go via Hebden Bridge & Blackshaw head.

Question for Halifax.
Would you know if the Norwich game would normally be on in Hebden Bridge Social club on Saturday.
Thanks for any info.

Re: Turf Moor from Leeds
I've never found the drive to be too bad. I work in the city centre so if setting off from there I will tend to go M62 > M66 > A56 > M65. It can be a little bad for traffic on night games until you get past Bradford, but I just tend to set off a little earlier. I live in Guiseley though and much prefer the drive through Keighley, Cowling, Colne, Nelson etc. so try and plan it to set off from home whenever I can.
Re: Turf Moor from Leeds
I grew up in HB - such an easy trip up Mytholm Steeps, Blackshawhead, across the moors. One of the most scenic drives to a ground you could think of.HalifaxClaret wrote: ↑Tue Jan 31, 2023 1:39 pmEasy to get back after night matches on the trains these days. Does anyone live up near Leyburn? I've decided to go on holiday by mistake the week we play Watford and wondered what the trip to and from the Turf is like midweek.

Re: Turf Moor from Leeds
You’re Adel area, so would be easier to go the route you’ve mentioned. It takes me on average about 30 mins to get from my house to LS16 as I would have to go across the City (I live near the M621 at Elland Rd)gandhisflipflop wrote: ↑Tue Jan 31, 2023 1:38 pmI make the trip to Leeds and back once a week for work. I use this route quite often as my grandparents live in Crosshills. Can be a nightmare during the week as Bradford/Saltaire back up very quickly!Rileybobs wrote: ↑Tue Jan 31, 2023 1:49 pmI've never found the drive to be too bad. Re: Turf Moor from Leeds
It will be dark on the way back, so the scenery won't be as nice, But Bishopdale-Wharfedale will be the shortest route. You join the A59 at Skipton.
The roads are very winding between the bottom of Bishopdale and Kilnsey, but so long as you take your time, and aren't a boy racer, you'll be fine.
If you prefer to drive faster, go from Leyburn to Bedale and join the A1. Then turn off at Ripon for the A59 at Harrogate. Considering the Blubberhouses, you won't be driving much faster, and driving a lot further.
Bishopdale is go Leyburn to Hawes road, and turn off just before Aysgarth. You can't get lost, the next junction is Skipton by-pass.

Re: Turf Moor from Leeds
Agree, M62/M66 is the quickest way, but is the longest which is a pain with fuel prices as they are. I am only 5 minutes from the M62 though, which makes life easier, an hour on a clear run.ClaretInLeeds wrote: ↑Tue Jan 31, 2023 1:35 pmI drive over from Leeds every game - it’s not ideal, but it’s a choice I made when I moved to Leeds.

Through Colne, Keighley, Bingley bypass and Bradford is ok for getting home, especially after night matches but not so good for getting there Saturday midday or after work for night matches.
Re: Turf Moor from Leeds
If your driving to Burnley if you take the last turn off the roundabout at the the old langroyd pub it takes you through the housing estate-it cuts out all the queuing at the traffic lights down the hill and all the traffic up past McDonald’s kfc etc.can save 10 -15 mins at the best off times. There are a million speed bumps to negotiate but if fetches you out right at the end were the sainsburys petrol station is.After the match as you will know you will be fine traffic wise.ClaretInLeeds wrote: ↑Tue Jan 31, 2023 2:22 pmI work in Northallerton and as long as you leave in plenty of time, you can go over Blubberhouses. If you're coming to the Turf, always best to go through Colne town centre rather than the standstill road.ClaretInLeeds wrote: ↑Tue Jan 31, 2023 2:22 pmI work in Northallerton and as long as you leave in plenty of time, you can go over Blubberhouses. A65 for me. It’s fine until you hit Colne.
Would like to get to more away games tho, so if WYC ever started running coaches, I’d be well up for it.

How about getting a motorbike. No waiting in traffic. Cheaper road tax better fuel economy win win.

Speechless, really? It's north of both obviously but Leeds on one side, Manchester on the other. The main point being it's close to both. But hey. Speechless.2 Bee Holed wrote: ↑Tue Jan 31, 2023 3:28 pmI assume you are saying Burnley is inbetween Leeds and Manchester? If so, I'm speechless!

Re: Turf Moor from Leeds
I'll give you Burnley is north of Manchester.
Burnley is west of Leeds.
I haven't scaled it, but I bet the three places form almost an equilateral triangle. So yes, as I say, I'm speechless that anyone can think Burnley is inbetween Leeds and Manchester.
However, it really isn't worth falling out over.

If you’re heading over that way at rush hour, you can either go Red Lane and through Barrowford (avoids the north valley) or, come over Skipton old road to Colne, past colne golf club, into trawden and then over the tops to Harle syke. Avoid the north valley road at all costs at any time!ClaretInLeeds wrote: ↑Tue Jan 31, 2023 2:22 pmI work in Northallerton and as long as you leave in plenty of time, you can go over Blubberhouses. Went to Uni in Leeds, granted it was a good few years back but I always found going heading out up Otley road, through Ilkley and then cutting across through Silsden to Crosshills and then in through Colne best. Sometimes managed it in under an hour in my little mini on a Friday afternoon.

Re: Turf Moor from Leeds
Don’t even touch Colne either go straight on at the Colne roundabout to Gisburn, or turn left at the Colne roundabout then right through Barlick. Either way you will end up at Barrowford, then plain sailing from there.Gp8419 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 31, 2023 3:02 pmIf your driving to Burnley if you take the last turn off the roundabout at the the old langroyd pub it takes you through the housing estate-it cuts out all the queuing at the traffic lights down the hill and all the traffic up past McDonald’s kfc etc.can save 10 -15 mins at the best off times. There are a million speed bumps to negotiate but if fetches you out right at the end were the sainsburys petrol station is.After the match as you will know you will be fine traffic wise.

Train to Manchester from Burnley.Manchester Road is pretty good I find. Around 45 minutes right into the centre of Manchester. Went to Hebden bridge in 20 minutes today and I think the train was going on to Leeds and York.
