Why not play our strongest team in the cup and go for it?
It may cost us several points, but nothing else, if we have a good cup run , but we have never been in such a position before to concentrate on the cup more than the league when appropriate.
Re: Why not play our strongest team in the cup and go for it?
I think we need to play more fringe players and see more of them.

We aren't going to win it, so bedding in the new players plus getting minutes into Twine, Churlinov, Bastien et al is more beneficial long term.

The new players and squad players can bed in in the league games, great chance of a good run and may go the distance with some favourable draws.
Bookies even fancy us. At 66/1 worth a bet .

Needed minutes in fringe player legs. It’s not like getting in to the European qualifiers and playing fringe players in July.

Players need game time, as Saturdays result showed. They aren't fringe players, they ate part of the squad, and we need to take advantage of every opportunity to get them on the pitch.

Re: Why not play our strongest team in the cup and go for it?
Play our strongest XI for goodness sake, if we overcome Ipswich and Fleetwood/Sheff Wed, we might get Leicester or Southampton in the quarters and on any given day we could beat them over 90 minutes.
Promotion is all but assured and we'll never have a better shot of going deep in the cup, anyone remember 2009 the cup successes didn't hinder us then did it, and that was when we possessed a thinner squad then we presently boast.

We’d be 90 minutes away from a Wembley semi-final, I’d argue that would also be hugely beneficial.distortiondave wrote: ↑Mon Jan 30, 2023 5:59 pmWe aren't going to win it, so bedding in the new players plus getting minutes into Twine, Churlinov, Bastien et al is more beneficial long term.

Re: Why not play our strongest team in the cup and go for it?
I’m expecting we will continue to use the cup to get minutes into players not featuring much in league games
Re: Why not play our strongest team in the cup and go for it?
So it should. It’s a squad game. The likes of Churlinov, Twine and the new signings all need minutes. It’s not like it’s massively weakening the team, these are all very good players in their own right.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Mon Jan 30, 2023 8:23 pmI’m expecting we will continue to use the cup to get minutes into players not featuring much in league games

We have a good chance of reacing the last eight. Then, who knows?
Re: Why not play our strongest team in the cup and go for it?
Nope. We give our second side their chance and trust them.Bordeauxclaret wrote: ↑Mon Jan 30, 2023 8:26 pmI think we may see a stronger side after tonight’s draw.

Re: Why not play our strongest team in the cup and go for it?
Expect a very similar line-up for the replay
That group will be more cohesive than they were at Ipswich and will have the benefit of a better playing surface - a number will have a role to play at Norwich too
Name a strong bench again and there are plenty of options to change things if it's not working
The replay will come 3/4 days ahead of Ipswich v Wednesday - arguably their most important game of the season - they are highly likely to prioritise that over the Cup

Re: Why not play our strongest team in the cup and go for it?
its the fault of the bigger clubs over numerous years that they have disregarded domestic cup comps.
they have ignored the tradition of it all, and it inevitably filters down to the fans. FA cup particularly was once huge, but sending out weakened squads has become the norm.Fans pretend it matters only when the latter stages come around and their clubs are somehow still involved.

Re: Why not play our strongest team in the cup and go for it?
The reason for me to keep the same approach is to check the fringe players can beat lower league opponents at home. Otherwise they won’t make it in the PL.
The QF is another matter. That is one game from Wembley. We should be virtually up by then. Unless the gap to the Blades is minimal I expect us to play a full strength side if we get that far. The others can play Hull away. If we get to the semi, same again.
Dyche’s failure to go for it against Olympiacos ended his hero status for many of us. Kompany can’t risk the same.

Re: Why not play our strongest team in the cup and go for it?
I Still think BPF is a better keeper than Muric.
More dependable. Can also easily play the VK way.
Better at claiming crosses, certainly better at corners with a packed box.
Better shop stopper.
The only two things against him -
1 - he was 2nd behind Pope...
2 -VK signed Muric.

Didn't Kompany say that if we weren't having a replay next week that we'd have arranged a friendly game for the squad players? Sure they will get more game time

JBG and Benson may be back for the replay.

There's a third thing against him actually. It's that VK picks the team, not you, and VK prefers his own opinion to yours.HunterST_BFC wrote: ↑Tue Jan 31, 2023 12:40 amI Still think BPF is a better keeper than Muric.

Re: Why not play our strongest team in the cup and go for it?
I am a total believer in always playing the strongest side as I have said often, however if you have trusted fringe players and they get you well advanced then it is unfair and cruel to rob them of their glory just because there might be the sniff of a final. Strongest side from the beginning (my preference) or stick with those who have done the job.

These cup games are an ideal opportunity to give game time to some who haven't played many minutes.
I'd stick with that idea meself.

The first 11 changes all the time with form, injuries and new signings.
The one player who needs to play every game, as he know's VKs system inside out, is Cullen.

Re: Why not play our strongest team in the cup and go for it?
It’s sad really that the FA Cup has become some kind of training exercise. Like a lot of guys on here I can remember when 3rd round day was eagerly anticipated for weeks and you would get some of your biggest crowds of the season on cup days. It’s all down again to the money and marketing of the PL and the ‘best league in the world’ rubbish. Everything takes second place now and it’s sad. Even trying to get to a match report in the media that isn’t in the PL is hard work. Strange though how the big (and not so big) clubs play weakened teams then suddenly find themselves in the quarters and decide that it might be good to start using Mr Billionaire and Mr Egocentric in the latter stages. I can’t even remember the last time I watched a cup final and time was when you would watch the build up all day then the match.
Times have changed for sure.
Times have changed for sure.
Re: Why not play our strongest team in the cup and go for it?
I call BS on anyone who says we have to concern ourselves with league play.
We have promotion nearly guaranteed. There is no time better to go for a trophy than right now.
For crying out loud, be aggressive! Take the chances we have!
Up the Clarets!!

Re: Why not play our strongest team in the cup and go for it?
If we don't take the cup seriously this year then we never will, terrific draw and a huge points advantage in the league.
Time to strike well the iron is hot as chances like this don't come along very often.

Re: Why not play our strongest team in the cup and go for it?
I totally agree.
But does any of us know our strongest line-up since the recent signings?
We need to rotate the squad, and we need to integrate our new signings.
This is not like playing the reserves.

Re: Why not play our strongest team in the cup and go for it?
We should be able to make it to the final 8.
My guess would be:
Man City
Man Utd
Tottenham
Brighton
Southampton
Leicester
Leeds
Burnley
...although some of those teams might not make it.
Without a doubt the final matches will be tough but anything can happen on the night, so let's aim to win!

Re: Why not play our strongest team in the cup and go for it?
In the next few weeks we play the teams currently 7th, 4th and 8th away and 5th and 11th (2nd best away record) at home.
Most of these games are squeezed in Sat - Tues too included a midweeker at Millwall, which is never easy.
It's great we've got such a cushion, but we are only 5 clear of Sheffield United, the main focus has to be staying above them and winning the league.
With the Ipswich replay midweek, it makes absolute sense to use our massive squad, of which Kompany has built for this exact purpose.
