Australians that played for Burnley
Just watched bits and pieces of Australia's friendly against Ecuador today (3-1 to the footballeroos) and Mark Robertson's son Alexander made his debut as a sub and I see he's on the books at City. Both his father and grandfather played for Australia too I believe. Aidin O'Neill also started, think it was his debut too.
I grew up in Australia (though was christened in Padiham) so took a real interest when Mark Robertson played for us but it was pre tv saturation so never really got a sense of whether he was any good. Does anyone remember much of him? Have there been many other Australians that have played for us? I assume I'm forgetting at least one obvious one.

Rhys Williams, right back on loan from Boro I think.
Pretty sure his brother (also a right back) Aryn played in our reserve team but never made the first team

Alex Cisak - Not sure if he ever played a game though?
Cameron Howieson? He was either from Australia or New Zealand, cannot remember though.

Cisak came on at Brighton after Heaton was sent off and then played in the League Cup win v Preston a few days later
Howieson was from New Zealand and I still think his chances of making it here were ruined by having to go off to play for their various teams for half the year

Heath brought him in on loan from Sheffield United but he got a bad facial injury on his debut.scrambledclaret wrote: ↑Fri Mar 24, 2023 11:42 amNever even heard of Hodgson, one game on loan I see.... cheers

His post-Burnley career suggests that the manager was probably right.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Fri Mar 24, 2023 12:12 pmWas highly rated by some at the club but not by the manager.

Re: Australians that played for Burnley
Nik Kudierski was later than Lafferty. He's probably referring to Ryan Townsend who made one first team appearance for us. Although Manchester born, with a strong Manc accent, he was brought up in Australia. He left us around 2005 when he was 18.dandeclaret wrote: ↑Fri Mar 24, 2023 1:20 pmNik Kudierski? - responding to Woodley, not Australian.

Re: Australians that played for Burnley
Thanks Fretters (and CT), hadn't read that (or realised he was mates with Steve Davis). He and I are about the same age and Marconi wasn't a million miles from where I grew up, obviously he was a bit better than I was. It seems he's had some success post playing career which is nice to read and seems to be back in the north west these days and see his son actually represented England at junior level.Fretters wrote: ↑Fri Mar 24, 2023 11:54 amProfile on Robertson, written by Tony on the old site: https://www.clarets-mad.co.uk/feat/ed35 ... ndex.shtml

Re: Australians that played for Burnley
Robertson was distinctly average at what is now league 1 level from memory!! Aidan O’Neil think he came on away at Chelsea once under Dyche.

I was amazed to read that Stan offered Robertson a deal when we went up to the second tier.Steve-Harpers-perm wrote: ↑Fri Mar 24, 2023 6:13 pmRobertson was distinctly average at what is now league 1 level from memory!! Aidan O’Neil think he came on away at Chelsea once under Dyche.
Yep, O'Neil came on at Chelsea and more than held his own.
