Thought it was, there are a lot (or used to be) of pubs called the Crown in Nidderdale, I’ve been in the Crown at Lofthouse, wonder if it still has a bog seat that looks like it’s made of barbed wire!

Yes, very strange. The village high up on the hill Middlemoor also has a pub called the Crown. I haven't tried it yet, but that's the beauty of walking. Leave a little bit to come back for.durhamclaret wrote: ↑Wed May 31, 2023 3:04 pmThought it was, there are a lot (or used to be) of pubs called the Crown in Nidderdale, I’ve been in the Crown at Lofthouse, wonder if it still has a bog seat that looks like it’s made of barbed wire!

Boring but Malham Tarn springs to mind straight away
Re: Walking in the Yorkshire Dales (favourite routes)
some fabulous pictures and makes me homesick for the beautiful British countryside!
Used to walk a little bit around Giggleswick & Settle but many years ago, as we were visiting that area fairly frequently at the time. Remember Malham from when I was late teens, great memories
However, we have been visiting the Lake District for a long time now on our visits home, we will be doing some walking when we get there in July but these days the walks are definitely shorter but still very enjoyable.

Did this a few weeks ago. I’d had enough of the dales by the end

For a short walk the Malham, Janet’s foss, Gordale scar, Malham tarn, Malham cove route is a cracker
For something longer I like the Wharfedale 3 peaks which starts in Kettlewell and takes in great whernside, buckden pike, and then Birks fell. Can be done in either direction. A lot less busy than the Yorkshire 3 peaks and more off path which I prefer

Come to think of it, Colburn, it was the Crown at Middlesmoor I was thinking of with the barbed wire bog seat, it’s a cracking boozer btw.Colburn_Claret wrote: ↑Wed May 31, 2023 4:30 pmYes, very strange. I always thought the best walk in Yorkshire was on the road to Lancashire!

I take in Malham Tarn as part of the round. Lots leave it out as it’s only a stretch of water and adds miles but to me the walk is incomplete without it.

Re: Walking in the Yorkshire Dales (favourite routes)
Another magnificent day out today.
START: Buckden village car park
1) Up Buckden Pike, following Buckden Beck. There’s a small footpath but this is definitely not the conventional way. Three small scrambles required but we managed it with our cocker…although it nearly cost me my marriage Follow the river past lovely waterfalls and eventually meet the main path up from Starbotton. Head to the trig.
2) Follow path down to Cray (pub stop if needed)
3) From Cray, head up onto the path marked Yokemthwaite, going above Todd’s Wood and Rais Wood.
4) At Yokemthwaite follow the river back to Hubberholme (pub)
5) At Hubberholme, follow road for 1km before taking river path back to Buckden.
6) Finish back in the middle of Buckden.
There were three lovely pubs in the route but we just stopped at the Buck Inn at the end, which was lovely.
16.3km, so 10 miles.
Fabulous day! .

Re: Walking in the Yorkshire Dales (favourite routes)
Did the walk on Thursday .
Got to the lead mines but Ken didn't fancy the Pike, a) he's 74 and b) you couldn't see it the cloud was so low in the morning.
Carried on around the contour to Cray. It's been years since I had a pint in the White Lion, but they've done a really good job inside, it's twice as big as it was, loads of character, and they keep a nice pint.
We then did Scar House, Hubberholme and back to the Buck for another pint.
A Hercules came up the dale and headed up Langstrothdale, we were looking down on it from near the mines. 2 hours later a Chinook came the other way.

Awesome! Hope you had a great day. We too saw a Hercules in the valley. Was a fabulous sight.

I was in a group climbing Tryfan when a jet went through the valley on its way to RAF Valley.
It’s unbelievable to look down on the roof of a jet in flight.

Re: Walking in the Yorkshire Dales (favourite routes)
Did a nice easy family walk of 4.5 miles on Thursday. Starting in Kettlewell we walked to Starbottom via the dales way and then a quick pint in the fox and hound followed by the walk back to Kettlewell via the river path.
My 6 year old managed it but i had to carry my 4 year old for over half of it.
Not the hardest of walks with only a bit of elevation gain but the valley between Kettlewell and Buckden is my favourite in the dales
Also whilst in the fox and hounds we heard a very low flying helicopter. So low we couldnt see it for trees. I assume it was a military chopper as well

Inchy, see Colburn’s post further up. Was a chinook. I agree about the valley. It’s stunning. Think Littondale is my personal fave.

I'm glad you followed the route I suggested up Buckden Pike but sorry that it almost cost you your marriage! Your photos show that there wasn't much water coming down the beck, so the falls weren't at their best. Go again sometime when it's been raining!

REDMIRE CIRCULAR (inc. Aysgarth Falls)
Stunning walk yesterday. Decent length but no peaks. Lots of meadows and riverside paths, plus of course, the fabulous Aysgarth Falls, devoid of much water.
START: middle of Redmire village
1) walk through local fields on public paths up to Castle Bolton.
2) head round the back of the castle and into the field, following the signs for Carperby.
3) Pick up signs for Aysgarth Falls and head down to see Upper, Middle and Lower Falls. Got a coffee and shared a brownie!
4) from Aysgarth, it’s straight up the steep steps into the churchyard of Saint Andrews Church. Once at the top, pick up the public footpath signposted ‘Wensley Bridge’
5) 4.5 miles to Wensley Bridge (the access to the Bolton estate) and immediately pick up the path heading back along the other side of the river.
6) After half a mile, take the footpath diagonally through the fields and away from the river.
7) Follow all the way back to Redmire, via paths, forest and quiet tracks.
22.3km so around 14 miles.

Nice walk John. We’ve done a shorter version several years ago, can’t do any walking at the moment due to waiting for a hip operation, but it’s great to see your pictures. Great excerise for your cocker as well. As a young lad living in Malham I often stayed at Aysgarth YHA in the summer as it was run by friends of my parents. My parents ran Malham YHA. I’ll never forget me and their son building a wood raft and launching it on the falls, we had a great time until my mates parents found out and gave us a right rollocking, you never think of the danger as young un. Thanks for sharing.

I went up Gunnerside Gill today, I didn't realise it was Swaledale Marathon day till I got there. I was melting by the time I got to the top, the runners should have been dying. 23 miles in today's heat.
