I think there's a reason why you're on my ignore list.
I mean trolling someone mid-thread is fine but to start one just to get some bickering going? Really?!

Not sure how they would get more people onside whilst getting their message across at the same time

I have no time for vandalism, causing inconvenience or disruption.
I do quite agree with their cause though, so for me they’re just going about it all wrong and they’d have better success with different methods.

Dr Patrick Hart, who is often on the wireless being interview, and often on the telebox being arrested is a GP at my wife's practice. You might find it all inconvenient but it all needs to be said and as a race we need to do something and quickly. It isn't going to get better otherwise.

OK, I think the lot of them are hypocritical idiots who are disrupting normal peoples lives. How do these ‘professional’ disrupters get to their destinations? Ho are the clothes they wear made and what are they made of, what are their expensive mobile phones made of???
There are far better and meaningful ways of helping the planet than this shower of complete a££holes….there you go…that’s what I think!

Say J.S.O are indeed correct about their somewhat doomsday view, then their actions really is a drop in the ocean to the potential consequences

You could deem them hypocritical, they'd argue they have no viable alternative due to the system in place
Like always, it's easy to vent frustration at the protestors, rather than the system

I've always thought the message should be more along the lines of "lets try and wean ourselves off oil", surely if we turned the tap off things would stop working pretty quickly.

I agree with this,
Arguing from their P.O.V, I guess that J.S.O would argue that 'we've tried and have been purported to be doing this for years, but nothing is changing..., or at least not changing quickly enough'

Re: Just Stop Oil...
I've no issues with the long term aim and getting rid of oil would be brilliant, but it's not going to happen overnight. I'm certain there will be a time when it's no longer used, but as mentioned above we (as a planet) need to develop the (hopefully far better) things which will make it redundant.
I suspect that JSO NOW protestors don't really realise how much they actually unwittingly use or rely on it tbh.

Re: Just Stop Oil...
The best way to phase out oil is to make production of sustainable alternatives cheaper, no self-respecting capitalist is going to choose a moral obligation to the planet over money so until it's more profitable to use something else oil will be here to stay.
Re: Just Stop Oil...
I think people hate them because they look and sound like alarmist, preening, middle class university graduates, and not because of the cause or even their methods. I think they're hilarious, personally. WTF is with all the soup? Where did that idea come from? Top banter, that. Good cause and everything, but it's a country full of entitled, self-centred gammon, and the only way JSO will ever effectively put wind behind their political sails is by appealing to the gammons' self-interest. Not exactly sure how you go about that, but on this issue I reckon some form of entryism would be a good start. And speak gammon language, not student language. Don't talk about the climate, make it about immigration and economic collapse. Appeal to their fear of rapid change, their need for stability and order.

Slavery was also economically beneficial to Capitalists in the South of the US and throughout History but still changed without an alternative
(I'm well aware there's a bit more to it than that btw)
Re: Just Stop Oil...
The day I see them in India and China I'll take notice. Until then, move them on accordingly
Re: Just Stop Oil...
JSO are attempting to force a political issue. Democracies can pretty much do anything they want, and if a democratically elected govt decides to legislate oil use into oblivion then there's not much a capitalist can do about it other than moan and up sticks to somewhere else, but then they have geopolitical factors to consider, so the point is to apply political pressure, ideally globally, but quite obviously you can only really affect that domestically. JSO's material aims are to change political consensus. It's taken for granted that profit is king, and the point they usually make is that this is why we're in this situation, so we'd better change that way of thinking or we're really fked.SammyBoy wrote: ↑Thu Jun 08, 2023 7:26 pmThe best way to phase out oil is to make production of sustainable alternatives cheaper, no self-respecting capitalist is going to choose a moral obligation to the planet over money so until it's more profitable to use something else oil will be here to stay.

Re: Just Stop Oil...
I don't know if that is a joke or if you're serious, but the irony is that if you started a protest group about shark finning and it gained a bit of traction, I'd actually be better informed about what shark finning is and why it's bad. At the moment I know nowt about it, and if it wasn't mentioned in this thread I'd still know nowt about it, so this kind of anecdotally demonstrates the effectiveness of public protest.ClaretDiver wrote: ↑Thu Jun 08, 2023 7:41 pmI think I might start up my own protest group….JSSF….Just Stop Shark Finning….believe you me, if this is not tackled seriously in the next decade this will have as far reaching effects as oil production….

Re: Just Stop Oil...
I think when they protested a Shell AGM - delaying it for hours - and got next to zero publicity for their cause that was when i realised that disrupting traffic and sports events really is a much more effective means of protest. Good luck to them.

Re: Just Stop Oil...
Just point to a bunch of droughts in non-white countries, show them the migration paths, say 'more of this to come' blah blah blah. Most people are easily swayed into taking up whatever causes they're told to if you poke at the right bits of their mind (such as it exists) and it's articulated in the right way, the right words spoken. Prince Charles put out some statement a few weeks ago, maybe a month or two ago, about the royal family's ties to historic slavery, and he was all about taking it seriously, proper thoroughly looking into it, slavery is horrible etc etc etc, and all the pliant little bootlickers didn't even bat an eyelid — the same people who screech about CRT and BLM and whatnot, at once and without wariness took to the notion of the importance of a serious consideration of historic racial injustice, all because it came out of Prince Charles's mouth. It's absolutely frightening when your brain isn't running wild on nationalism and traditionalism to see how easily people can be worked on like that.

Re: Just Stop Oil...
The planet is getting warmer so something needs to be done ASAP, however I feel there tactics are just p1ssing people off, they would be far better fund raising to pay for more research into renewables , tree planting etc.
Re: Just Stop Oil...
I don't think JSO is just middle class students concerned about the environment. The actual protestors might be, but I'm sceptical of the organisation as a whole. Who funds them? Why do they get mass media coverage when other protests get none at all? Our government have already committed to net zero so what exactly do they want? Why don't they target China and India, the world's biggest polluters who totally rejected the net zero goal?

Agree with the cause they are highlighting but not the way they go about it disrupting ordinary people, getting more bad publicity than good. Why don't they target/ highlight the billionaires with their private jets?

Re: Just Stop Oil...
I guess they think that 'all publicity is good publicity' - I mean, we've only really heard about them due to the nature of their protests, right?
Re: Just Stop Oil...
Understand the "cause" but two obvious issues for me:
1. They are protesting and slowing traffic to about 2mph where fuel efficiency is probably at it worst.
2. Us stopping licensing new oil and fossil fuels does nothing in the grand scheme of things. In fact its probably worse for the planet since we wont stop using fossil fuels, we'll just ship it from overseas on boats that burn... fuel.
And then after they get this, what next?

Yeah cool claret they are certainly getting a lot of publicity, maybe there's no such thing as bad publicity.

I wonder whether this group are an oil company honeytrap.
Start a campaign group that is so utterly ludicrous that 99.9 per cent of the population turn away from them, thus diminishing genuine environmental issues. I mean, these people are so pathetic and puritanical that they don't even realise they are doing way more harm than good. A bunch of tossers.
