Some serious overreactions. He’s raw, he’s got a bit to learn, but he isn’t a write off to me.

I'm just glad VK had the same view as me regards the starting line up, we looked far better last night, and I'm sure once we get 1 or 2 more players into that starting 11, we will become even better.
I miss 5 or so games now due to a holiday, but I'm sure on my return we will be a different looking team regards, personnel, performance and results

Re: Benson
One thing I’ll give Benson credit for is his movement. I thought it was far, far better than Vitinho’s was and gave some good options for the forward pass. Unfortunately the two passes he did receive (from his good movement) he wasted. He must have some end product, he’s been a regular for a top 4 side in Belgium and last season got 5 goals and 5 assists (non set piece). Maybe just trying too hard at the minute.

Where have I said he’s shite?
I said KRBFCs scouting report looks to be accurate. He said that he’s tricky player but his end ball is abysmal. I would suggest that looks accurate.

Re: Benson
Too early to write him off but bar a couple of good moments against Luton he's looked below par. Could say the same about anyone we've played right wing though really - Costelloe probably got more leeway being so young. Not sure if he's trying too hard but he has got into space well a few times and flunked the final ball/shot. He doesn't seem short of confidence so not sure what the problem is but it's hard to start him atm

Re: Benson
When can you decide if a players end product is bad or when attackers just aren't in the right places?
Most of his wasted crosses don't seem to be bad crosses. He either isn't looking up, or we're not attacking the ball well enough.
I'm sure it will get better in time, Kompany said he wants to see 4 or even 5 players in the box yet versus Hull we usually just had one or two.

Absolutely electric tonight, changed the game completely. Finally some end product, more of that please.
Re: Benson
Superb from him today, changed the game, when we’ve got teams pegged in like that he’s a difference maker

Electric tonight.
I wouldn’t start him personally as I think that raw pace and directness is a real asset from the bench, but tonight he justified the outlay. Looks a very exciting player and had their defence terrified.

He's seen JBG starting ahead of him and he's come on with something to prove. It's called competition for places and we haven't seen it for about five years.

The way certain posters love to write players off quickly is because they think having strong opinions makes them the smartest person in the room. Same reason they pretend to watch the French second division or whatever.

Re: Benson
Some embarrassing comments to look back at the start of this thread. We have players coming to play in a country and league for the first time and they are written off after a few minutes of football.
Why would any manager - let alone someone who has played at the highest echelons of the game - sign a player with “no end product” ?
And the funniest thing is that his biggest critic was the same person who regularly posts on this board that he is some kind of expert on the game and especially overseas players and will often comment as to how little the rest of us know about football.

Love how posters now need to bump the odd occasion I was wrong, comes with the territory of getting most correct I guess. From what I saw of him in Belgium I wasn’t convinced, he’s had the season of his life and I held my hands up. We’ve been over this several times though.
I did however write after one game, “absolutely electric tonight and changed the game, more of that please” so I was very much open and hoping to be wrong.

Re: Benson
Anyone who watched his first few appearances and genuinely thought he'd be the success he has ended up being is lying to themselves.
He looked like he was going to be physically dominated in the Championship. I remember him simply missing the ball when trying to use his right foot a couple times. He did little to make anyone think he was the dynamite he ended up being.
I like to think that after 30+ years of watching the game I can tell a good footballer immediately, even if they don't play well, but the only thing that gave me hope was the fact he constantly wanted the ball. That was the only real positive. Fast forward a few months and the guy was a revelation.

Bear in mind however that within 3 weeks of making his debut he was producing a match-winning performance against Millwall. It wasn’t “a few months” until he settled in.jlup1980 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 09, 2023 1:35 pmAnyone who watched his first few appearances and genuinely thought he'd be the success he has ended up being is lying to themselves.

The ball glued to him and he turned on a swivel - caused Luton a lot of problems.
Average players simply can't move like that at all - you know a player has a bit when you see them - obviously you can't predict how successful they'll be but you can tell that they have the skill required.
Same thing when Zaroury first played - his touch (how his touch sets up his dribbling ie touching the ball into space) his chest control ability and also the ability to pass/cross with both feet were apparent for me after 10 minutes of watching him.

Saying someone is going to be a superstar after a couple of good games is equivalent to saying they are sh-ite after a couple of games. It was the people who said the latter that we are talking about now.
And as said above it was not a few months - it was a few weeks before we started to see him shine and become a match winner which is pretty special considering the circumstances of a new team, a new league, a new country etc. It’s pretty amazing that Zaroury, Beyer etc also hit the ground running so quickly and they were even younger than Benson.
So much credit has to be given to VK and his team for giving these lads the confidence to express themselves and to not worry about having the odd bad game or making mistakes during a game. Muric is another young player who just got better as the season developed. It’s a massive help to individuals when the collective improves and that’s what happened when we turned the draws we dominated games into victories. The players believed they were invincible !!

People like to get a forecast right. We all do. It is sensible though to wait a while until you see something positive. Plenty of fans saw something positive from the start.and said so because they were looking for positives? Just a shame that others were looking for negatives to reinforce their earlier prediction.

Just needs a bit of patience. However when someone asks how long they have to be patient for, you know they just don't get it.
Re: Benson
I've seen most things in my time watching Burnley, great keepers, brilliant, dominating centre halves, classy full backs who've gone on to international honours, superb, cultured midfielders and lethal strikers....
Not seen anything like this kid before though.

Another thing when watching players is if they look like they tend to receive the ball in space or if they look like they have a lot of time on the ball - really highlights their intelligence.
Could see it when Barton signed in 2015 - just looked to be a level above what we have had in midfield…. Defour obviously stepped that up again upon his arrival
