Stockport County
Congratulations to Stockport County who after an 11 year absence will be back in the football league next season. We had a great rivalry with them in the late 80's and early 90's and its good to get a proper north west football club back in the league.
Hopefully it won't be too soon but I reckon in the next 10-20 years Stockport could well become our fierce rivals once again

Hard to know whether this is a sincere post or not from the OP.
Certainly an unrequited rivalry if ever there was one.
So pretty @£@= fishing to be honest.

You'll definitely need to cast far better than that DA, especially as you've got Rileybobs nipping at your heels trying to post like you these days. He'll outdo you soon if you're getting this complacent.

Some strange responses to my post. Not sure why congratulating a fellow NW team on their promotion whilst reminiscing about the old times when we were once rivals would trigger a response from anyone other than to also congratulate them.
I suppose if you are one of these Johnny come lately Premiership glory hunter type fans you probably wouldn't remember us when we were in the lower leagues. Also I guess we've got our fair share of arrogant and uppity fans who now think we are above clubs like Stockport, Halifax and Preston which is a bit sad really cos I like to think we are quite a grounded bunch

Stockport County remember them, Friday night football. Some great nights.
As for a rivalry there wasn’t really one was there, they didn’t like us, we weren’t that bothered. A bit like the Leeds/ Man U rivalry, it’s all one sided.

they had a weird rivalry and hatred of us, to us they were no more of a rival than Rochdale. Defo pleased they are back, as clubs like that shouldn't not be in the league
Weird, very one sided rivalry though, and they absolutely refused to accept that we didn't give two s**ts about them

Re: Stockport County
Awful club. Remember going there a couple of times in the 90s and a one sided rivalry. The second time, I remember adult Stockport fans starting on shirt wearing teens. Out of order.
Then, around five years after the play off final, I was talking to a girl in a nightclub queue in Sheffield, who it transpired was a Stockport fan. She was trying to tell me that Stockport had sold all their tickets for Wembley . When I tried to reason with her lack of logic she slapped me across the face!!!

In terms of one sidedness I think Stockport saw us a bit like we see Leeds these days. I did used to enjoy going Edgeley Park back in the day probably a bit like the Leeds fans enjoy coming to Turf Moor

Saw them play Rochdale at Spotland in the 1950s, Australian Ken Grieves in goal for them, he also played cricket for Lancashire.

I don’t quite buy that we didn’t care about them back in the late 80s/early 90s. They certainly hated us more than we hated them but I remember them frequently being a thorn in our side and it being particularly sweet when we beat them.

Yep this is a fair reflection. It was post the play-off final where they they hung on to the hatred and became really bitter whilst we stopped caring but as you say at time there was some rivalry.
I think it stems form when over a couple of seasons we got them in the Autoglass or whatever it was called and the league cup so played them 6 or 7 times in the space of a couple of seasons. That and all the trouble between Burnley and the cops on that Friday night game

Re: Stockport County
Prior to this 1985/6 season i think and another Friday evening game. It poured down so 5 of us opted to go in the stand rather than the open terrace. Just before half time a kid came down, fag in mouth and can't have been older than 11 or 12 to inform us that "Stockport lads usually sit here'. He was sent packing, then at half time it kicked off with said Stockport lads who were sat towards the back of the stand. We had a real issue with the Police too, one kicked us out of the stand into the open end, another wouldn't let us into the away end and sent us back into the stand. Only to be met by the copper who threw us out to threaten us with arrest if we didn't get out.Devils_Advocate wrote: ↑Mon May 16, 2022 11:33 amYep this is a fair reflection. The next time i went was September 1988 and we all know what happened that evening.

Re: Stockport County
I was on a day/night out in Blackpool last June 2021.
On making my way back to the hotel after grabbing a takeaway, we bumped into a group of 4 or 5 lads, all singing " we hate Burnley, we hate Burnley"
Me thinking, are they Blackburn, Preston or Blackpool supporters, i will give them some banter back.
When asking who they supported and being given " Stockport County" I just walked away laughing.
Talking about other one sided rivalries, I was down south last summer visiting my uncle down in Bovey Tracey. We took a a day trip into Plymouth. I was proudly wearing my Burnley home top and the abuse i received was unbelievable.

If Stockport sold all their tickets for Wembley that day, they must have only asked for about 8,000 in the first place. Embarrassing.

Stockport County unveils Edgeley Park expansion plans to nearly double its capacity.
Stockport County launched the next phase of consultation on plans to expand its historic Edgeley Park stadium. The expansion would increase capacity from 10,852 to 18,000. This would include the eastern expansion and enhancement of the historic North Stand (Danny Bergara Stand) and East Stand (Railway End).
The expanded North Stand would provide around 600 more seats, while the new East Stand's capacity would increase from 1366 to around 4500. The North Stand’s historic brick frontage along Hardcastle Road would be retained and repaired as part of the plans. Subject to securing planning permission, the Club is looking to begin work on the North Stand eastern extension in early 2025.

[Edit] No, it was three seasons later. But the slump came well after Wembley.

I'm sure they didn't - although it did take them another three years to get promoted after which they had five years in the second tier.

Can see edit, we played them the season after relegation and relieved them of Ian Helliwell. Think their fortunes changed that season when palmer was manager and they were down by March.
Re: Stockport County
Actually I've just checked the league tables, and was amazed to find that after winning at Wembley in 1994, we obviously finished higher than them in 1994-95, but then they finished higher than us in the league every year till 2000-01. They were relegated from the Championship in 2002, then relegated from League One in 2005, but then got promoted again in 2008. Their disaster period is much later than we thought!

When they are near the middle to bottom of League One, they'll be back averaging around 5,000
Re: Stockport Count
Didn’t Barnes score 5 against them in the Heath season? I think they were promoted along with Bury. Do remember going to Edgeley Park twice in the championship, 0-0 on a very wet Tuesday night stood on open end and a 2-0 win, sat under cover, cannot remember who scored, probably a G.Taylor headerdsr wrote: ↑Mon Mar 18, 2024 2:48 pmActually I've just checked the league tables, and was amazed to find that after winning at Wembley in 1994, we obviously finished higher than them in 1994-95, but then they finished higher than us in the league every year till 2000-01.
