What an outstanding cricketer dad was too. Just a shame he suffered with so many injuries. If his lads are half as good then they’ll be good players.

I had the good fortune to play against Freddie up Padiham.

Yes, you forget just how good a bowler he was. But there's footage on YouTube of him bowling to Ponting and Kallis. Two of the best batsman of the era.

And he seemed to be the nemesis of Adam Gilchrist.

He always claims to have not been a great bowler but that’s exactly what he was. We always seem to think of his batting first but he was outstanding with the ball.

He was for sure a better bowler than batter - had some great innings of course but much more deadly and consistent with ball in hand.

He was for me too. Very consistent as a bowler while less so as a batsman but you didn’t want to be bowling to him when at his best with the bat.

I'm glad he seems to be well on the road to recovery aftert the Top Gear crash. One of those cricketers who got people talking about the game.

He's done some coaching with the England team which I think was the first time we'd seen him since that crash, and now he's doing another series with the lads from Preston who he introduced to cricket. You are so right, got you talking about the game and provided some real entertainment when you went to watch him play.

Echo Gandhisflipflop in that the 2005 series was one of my greatest sporting memories too. I listened to the entire thing on Test Match Special while picking fruit on the south coast and living in a tent. I didn't realise how well test cricket fit the radio medium until that summer. Loved every moment of the coverage.
