I’m currently in St Bees, and there was a full sized Sith dummy in a house window that we walked past.
A bit unnerving to be honest.

Re: Joanna Gosling
People have been saying this for years, yet it’s still here and will continue to be for a long time thankfully. Maybe you want to see more advert strewn Channel 5 crap. You do you, I guess.
And all this because some newsreader I’ve never heard of previously is leaving. Her own decision btw, just to bring an actual fact into the discussion.

Not strictly true.Swizzlestick wrote: ↑Fri Jan 27, 2023 10:58 pmAnd all this because some newsreader I’ve never heard of previously is leaving. Her own decision btw, just to bring an actual fact into the discussion.
She and others decided to leave, when they were told they had to re-apply if they wanted a job. New shinty contract, mo doubt. Tory Fascists have taken apart every British institution and wrecked it.

Re: Joanna Gosling
Well this was kind of my underlying point. This is happening precisely because the Conservatives have been putting the squeeze on the BBC and they’re being forced to make these decisions. It’s all ‘defund the BBC’ from the right until it affects something they actually like. Oh not that bit! It remains true that it was her decision to leave though.

I once was asked, along with all my colleagues across the UK, to 're-apply ' for my job.Swizzlestick wrote: ↑Fri Jan 27, 2023 11:16 pmWell this was kind of my underlying point. I was very hurt at the time and was not going to apply. Word got out and the most senior management were concerned (I was equivalent of top of the league) and my management team basically stormed my office and insisted I apply. It was that which got me to write a bloody CV (never had one before, as I was always asked)
Anyway, at the interview I told them that I resented being there and that I felt I had earned my right, without having to justify it.
The HQ guy liked me and my new boss, who didn't like me, (saw me as a threat, as she was hopeless) tried to catch me out on an exercise we all had to do. She didn't, of course and the HQ guy loved it! Anyway, I was grumpy throughout and she knew it.
I retained my job for 6 terrible months, before she engineered me out of it (I was the last left of the top zone, which she emptied and replaced by inexperience and cluelessness...but loyal puppies.
I was informed by a colleague that ALL of her colleagues had rounded on her and told her she had messed up the best zone and dumped the best manager and she was wrong.
She was edged out a year after. I saw her in a corridor. She had no current role. Never spoke.
Made me feel better! However, I do understand how Joanna Gosling and anyone, in such a position feels.
Took me a long time to recover from the 6 months torture and undermining.

You know what. That’s absolutely uncalled for. This is someone opening up about a time in their life when they weren’t comfortable and the only thing you can think of is to score points. Shame on you. You must be a hideous, uncaring human being.

No actually, I’d rather watch more high quality programming and top sport on the BBC ( I see it looks like they are giving up the Masters as well now).

I think we’re broadly on the same page though - they want rid of the BBC but want the BBC to keep their favourite things. Roper’s post does it again above. Even though it was the government who changed the UK Listed Events Regime to make it easier for Sky to nab the Masters rights. It’s still the BBC’s fault.

Re: Joanna Gosling
All due to the proposed merger of BBC News and BBC World News, as discussed above, presenters have had to reapply for their jobs and do screentests. Joanna and a few others like Tim Wilcox have decided against going through this process.

Re: Joanna Gosling
They'll end up on that new Murdoch news channel or the other one that was recently setup. Some of the big hitters from BBC Radio 4 now present on Times Radio. I don't mind Times Radio, but TalkTV and GB News are like 6th form media projects when compared to Sky News and the BBC.

Re: Joanna Gosling
Support them then rather than saying they’re ‘deservedly’ dying. The BBC are being forced to downsize due to the government cutting their funding, hence having to cut the news staff and losing journalists like Gosling. They’re losing the Masters because the government changed the parameters surrounding ‘crown jewel’ sporting events, essentially pricing them out. Direct your ire towards them if you want a better BBC.roperclaret wrote: ↑Sat Jan 28, 2023 5:44 pmWhere did I say I wanted rid of the BBC? I just want a good BBC.
